One of the best Batman games I have playedElethomiel | July 9, 2013 | Review of Batman Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Overflow 1 - PC
I loved this game. It took me at least one playthrough to get the hang of the fighting system though and I feel the tutorial section could have better explained it. I would recommend players have a go at the challenge maps to get comfortable with the freeflow combat system after a couple of hours of gameplay. The detective mode was halfway between a gimic and a necessity, ending up being much more useful just to keep track of bad guys rather than any actual "detective work". In the end I was wrapped up enough in the atmosphere of the game that I didn't mind. I wasn't terribly keen on the characterisation of the Titan guys either, nor the **SPOILERS** Titan Joker at the end. I felt they were too cartoonish for a game that more or less stayed about as gritty as you can make it while staying faithful to bad guys like Poison Ivy etc., Victor Zsasz was also quite dumb looking. Some of the aesthetics aside though the structure and playthrough are very good and until I played Arkham City I really didn't think you could make a better Batman game.
Kooky but not in a good wayElethomiel | July 9, 2013 | Review of Psychonauts - PC
I'll confess I didn't play this all the way through. It was entertaining enough but the tone of the game is aimed at a very specific sense of humour that was not mine. It just became grating and the cutesy-poo graphics didn't help. Some of the gameplay was frustrating as well, punishing you a bit more that I thought was fair for missing jumps etc. and some basic challenges were difficult enough to be frustrating. I don't know if the game designers had made up their mind as to whether this was supposed to be fun or challenging but in the end I found it to hit neither mark sufficiently. Enjoyed it while I was playing it but when I quit I had little to no interest in loading it up again.
Brilliant if repetitive at timesElethomiel | July 9, 2013 | Review of XCOM Enemy Unknown Overflow - PC
This has to be the best turn based strategy released for years, it's consistent, mostly fair and beautifully executed. I would have liked more options for weapons as it gets bogged down in a huge amount of racing to better your weapons that you sacrifice some of the joys of tactical play. That's just focussing on the negative though. Enjoyed playing it, played it through thrice and loved it every time.
