Definite improvement.

EnemY | July 7, 2013 | Review of Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition - PC

The latest iteration of the Mortal Kombat franchise is definitely a step up from the previous few in many ways, chief of which being the gameplay aspect. If you've happened to play the classics (Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 especially), you'll notice the feel of the game is quite similar. This is a very good thing, as it feels far smoother and more natural than Armageddon, Deception or Deadly Alliance. It features a somewhat bizarre single-player storyline based on alternate timelines which some reviewers have disliked, yet even this is a step up from Armageddon or Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, and if you take into account that storylines in Mortal Kombat games have always been a little far-fetched, you'll see it's not really a bad thing. It also features a lengthy "Challenge Tower" mode which includes numerous game modes which vary from hilarious to extremely difficult, but which are, nevertheless, possible to complete, which will end up giving you a great sense of accomplishment upon completion. The visuals are - of course - stunning, with great care for detail, and FINALLY feature some actual cosmetic damage to the characters as they fight. It may not be a LOT, but it's still nice to see that if you punch Scorpion in the face enough times, his mask will crack open and you'll be able to see his skull underneath. But the best part is - naturally - the multiplayer. And you'd better believe that if you get a buddy to play this with you, you won't be walking away before you've both got callouses on your thumbs. There are still a couple of issues, such as the ever-annoying "grab" maneuver which goes through block and has animations which are JUST long enough to be annoying, or the fact that they've decided against all reason to include Freddy Krueger in the roster (i am aware many people would disagree with me on this last one, and i have nothing against Freddy in general. I just don't think he's appropriate here, specifically.) This is why i am reluctant to give it a 10 out of 10, and will settle for 9, but overall it's a great game, and i heartily recommend it. Oh: and there's this thing called an X-Ray move. There's a meter that fills up as you fight. You can use it to power up your super-moves, do a "breaker" or perform an X-Ray move. Try the X-Ray move. Then try it on your friends. Trust me: you'll REALLY like trying it on your friends.
