When Ken Levine and Irrational Games released System Shock 2 in 1999, the gaming world was thoroughly amazed at the world that had been created, the storyline, and the fluidity of action. 2007 rolled around and Irrational did the same thing, only eight years later with Bioshock, the spiritual successor to System Shock 2.
Though Bioshock may stand out for its brilliant use of combat mechanics, driving storyline, and deep progression, what is most notable the game is its ability to draw the player into the world. The sense of immersion is second to no other modern game, only being approached by Dead Space's gorgeous setting.
The world of Rapture is dynamic and living. The visuals will draw you in and make you want to explore everything, looking for everything the failed Utopia has to offer. The score and soundtrack are amazing and will leave you breathless during heated sequences.
The gameplay is amazing, as well. It plays like a smart game, unlike many of today's shooters. Overall, Bioshock is one of the greatest games ever made, possibly even in the Top 3.
