Story driven "choice" gameplayNhb93 | Aug. 11, 2013 | Review of Spec Ops: The Line
This game is probably my GOTY 2012. It was just that good. The story is based on the classic novel "Heart of Darkness" but set in a new location, much like Apocalypse Now. It's not exceptionally long by any means, and I'm not sure how much replay value there is to get out of it once you beat the story once, but the story the first time you play through it will blow you away. I felt that it really took video game storytelling to a new level. The characters all had their personalities well thought out, and they were all voiced appropriately, with your character being voiced by Nolan North.
Throughout the story, you get given choices, a la RPG, not shooter. There aren't dozens of choices, and they all feel meaningful. If you get lost in the game like I did (nearly beating it in a single sitting), the choices have some weight to them and really make you think about which one to make.
The AI could certainly be better at many times, but they do try to flank and use cover during large firefights, of which there are many. The game is visually appealing, with animations being fluid and the whole nine. I didn't notice any visual bugs.
If you like story driven games, this is certainly a game to be looked at for all that it offers.
