Intense and provocative

Spec Ops is one of those games where game-play is merely in service of plot. What you'll find within is a competent 3rd-person cover-based shooter. The team AI spotting mechanic works well, and the use of sand as an offensive/defensive tool is refreshing, but apart from that, it's standard shooter fare.

The plot is the true selling point. Based on 'Heart of darkness', you'll question your motivation and sanity in a military shooter that flies in the face of tired genre tropes.

For a gritty, realistic, military shooter, there is some excellent use of colour, especially in some of the more elaborate building interiors.

Truly haunting set pieces and gripping narrative, the game invites reflection into the shooter genre, and just why we kill for fun.

Both Yager and 2K should be commended for releasing such a provocative and intense game.

One of my favourite experiences of 2012.
