Quite easily the best game of the year...or maybe even two years

S2uRI | Sept. 6, 2015 | Review of Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain - PC

The quality of the game exceeds all expectations. It runs flawlessly on old hardware and looks gorgeous. The optimization is absolutely mind boggling as 3+ year old hardware can run the game at almost max settings at constant 60 fps (possibly higher but I have it locked). Gameplay and mechanics wise, the game is completely locked down and perfected by 3 decades of experience under Kojima's belt. Music is top notch and well done. My only complaint is that too much of the story is hidden in tapes that you have to play. If you are an action hero, then this wouldn't bother you at all. If you are a veteran of the MGS series, you may be slightly peeved.

Reminiscent yet original.

This game has been an amazing ride...On one hand, I felt like it was reminiscent and true to the old platformers (although it wasn't a platformer) and storytellers, but on the other hand, it felt like an entirely new experience. The visuals were superb and the entire atmosphere of the game was near perfection. The game director tried something I've never seen before and utilized the narrator to narrate every conceivable scenario for the protagonist, and with the epic voice that is comparable to actor Morgan Freeman, this game just wins it. I can't stress this enough but this is money well-spent.

Unique Top-Down Shooter...

built on the Unreal Engine. It's visual elements are satisfying and intensive. The story and gameplay falls short unfortunately. The story tends to be rather confusing and I sometimes felt it didn't even connect and the gameplay was very linear. Despite this, co-op with a friend was quite intriguing and fun as it wasn't just all guns and gore. Strategic choke points and positions could be taken during "siege" setups and turrets could be built to defend your position. This game should be on your list if you have a friend who will play with you.
