Fun but different from the first

ZippaLip | July 12, 2012 | Review of Supreme Commander 2

SC2 is different from the first one. It is less complex, not as big, not as "epic". It's similar to the classic RTS, is faster, whit more differences between factions, with more "super unit", it has good looking graphic. Maybe the multilpayer is better, the matches can be less boring. But something form the first game is still presentAt the end if you have loved the first SC you can dislike it, but if you hate it let's give a try for this sequel.

Masterpiece of modern strategy games

ZippaLip | July 12, 2012 | Review of Company of Heroes THQ

This game, released in 2006, is one of the most important RTS ever. Based on the gameplay of the first Dawn of War (2004), COH add more innovation: better realist graphic, historical accuracy on the missions-places-weapons-vehicles..., depp control of the units wiht covers, aim, fire rate and more. The multiplayer games are also well implemented. If you love WW2 and RTS take it!

Brilliant improvement of Oblivion

ZippaLip | Nov. 21, 2011 | Review of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (NA)

TES V: Skyrim is a very huge game with many good aspect from the series. The world is magnificent, with hundreds quests and location to discovery. You can play it for hours, avoiding the main quest, because there are a lot to do, or simply lose time in exploration. The graphic is more detailed and realistic than Oblivion, landscapes are amazing, interior and faces are good but some textures are very weak (but you can use some mods to improve them). The game is “only” 6gb on your HD and can work even in the old computers (system reqs are similar to Fallout 3/NV). Gameplay has some innovation and is simplified but still good, maybe the hardcore RPG gamers dislike them. Inventory and menu can be hard to handle (cause they're designed for consoles) and the mouse lags (you can fix it in the game files). There are some minor crashes and minor bugs (luckily not at the bad level of the older Bethesda games). So Skyrim is an amazing world to explore, maybe new mods and good expansion / DLCs in the future will make it even better, fixing some minor problems.

Just a review of the bonus content of GOTY

ZippaLip | Nov. 11, 2011 | Review of Borderlands Game of the Year Edition dns

The overall addiction is good. The more DLCs you play, the more easier is the game because your experience goes up, so the 2nd or 3rd DLC you play can be very easy.

Zombie Island: very funny DLC, good atmosphere, you fight against zombies in a swamp zone. Mad Moxxi: the worst DLC, very hard (enemies are always at your level) and boring. Is useless for single players because all the game is a sequence of very long arenas whit massive wave of enemies. Getting the achievements can be quite impossible. Don't buy it alone. Secret Armory: you must have it. Very long new zone, new enemies, rare weapons, the super final boss and many more. More important: the level cap is higher. Robolution: totally crazy one. All enemies are the different version of claptraps but is fun. Pass for Duke Nukem Forever: gain free access to the first DLC of the game (maybe you gain some other features, I don't know).

Amazing HoMM's spin-off (Only one technical problem)

ZippaLip | May 15, 2011 | Review of Kings Bounty: The Legend

King's Bounty The Legend use the turn-based combat system (a clone of Heroes of Might & Magic saga) with the exploration of the map in real time. It is oriented to GDR style because you had to do some quests and you can choose different path or bonuses.

The world is fantastic, the hero can explore it on horseback or by boat, there are many location, in fact you can enter mines, caves, towers and so on... whit many units (whit 2 or 3 upgrades), races or characters and special features. The graphic is so amazing and detailed, very fit for this game, you can have a 3d vision without losing details.

The atmosphere is so beautiful, so humorous and funny. The game is not for everyone because is hard (but whit the latest patch now you can choose the difficulty).

There's one problem: the game crashes in some system whit 64bit and some types of video card. There's no fix for it, this problem is not solved after 3 years of the release. So if you have a modern OS version and Nvidia video card you may NOT run the game well. Very frustrating!

The masterpiece of modern FPS

ZippaLip | May 4, 2011 | Review of BioShock DNS

What can I say more about Bioshock? Is recognized as one of the best FPS released in the recent years, a period whit many shooter but whit few games that emerge from the mass.

The peculiarity of Bioshock is the deep story and the atmosphere, set in a detailed underwater city whit its peculiar locations. The player live the story trough the exploration and the quests given by a mysterious man, is full of choices and suprises, cut scene and thrilling moments. An important thing to say is that the levels are very well designed from the first to the last: you can visit a medical center, a tram station, a casinò and so on. The game took 15-20 hours so it last longer than the average in single player (there's no multiplayer mode).

The graphic is amazing, using the powerful Unreal Engine 3, especially good in the water, light, fire and electrify effects. The gameplay is similar to the classic shooters except for the saving (or killing) of little girls guarded by the big daddies for rewards (the famous enemy used in the cover of the game) and the use of a special psychic powers like a secondary weapons that effect the enemies (freeze, stun of burn them for example). So there's an interaction in that elements and the player have many strategies to confront the enemies (use weapons, powers, use the object in the map for example oil, barrels, water....). There's also weapons, ammo and skills mods, and hacker puzzles: few elements of RPG games (but the game is a FPS don't forget it!).

What can I say more about Bioshock? Let you be enchanted by the atmosphere of the city of Rapture!

One of the best classic platforms!

ZippaLip | April 26, 2011 | Review of Sonic 3 and Knuckles CAP

Sonic 3 is the best chapter of the Sonic's series, the last whit bidimensional graphic and one of the greatest old style platforms (one of the others is Super Mario World), released just few years before the coming of 3d graphic.

You can choose different characters (Sonic, Tails of Knuckles) whit a little variation in gameplay, but the action is still quick and dynamic like the other Sonic games. The levels are funny and various, you can find a lot of platforms elements: jumping pods, secrets (the giant rings lead you into special areas where you can get the emeralds), power up etc.

In the final levels it can be hard, you had to be quick to win! For the players who want to revive the good old arcade atmosphere.

The traditional saga in new good clothes

ZippaLip | April 19, 2011 | Review of Heroes of Might and Magic V

Heroes of Might & Magic is a well known and praised saga, one of the best in turn-based strategy pc games. HoMM IV in 2002 was a controversial step in the saga, radical changing were made, criticized by many fans. Whit HoMM V everything (not all, because, in my opinion, there were even good innovation in Homm IV) is restored like the 3rd installment in 1999 (the most famous and loved) whit a new graphic and little improvements. The result is surely good: we have all the traditional elements of the saga (resources system, 7 units for faction whit upgrades and regular weekly growth, heroes not in combat etc...), loved by fans since the 90's.

The 3d graphic has a new style (something similar to manga) which is totally new but well designed, the map looks colorful and amazing even nowadays, we can zoom in and rotate the camera, the interface is improved, especially in the combat system whit better stats and turn bars. The single player campaign is very long (5 mission for each of the 6 factions) whit a good story developed trough some well made cut-scenes. There were some bugs at the moment of the release but now, after several years, some patches has fixed all.

That's nothing really new, this is the only real weak point, maybe the developers could have done something more innovative but all we love from HoMM is here, better than ever (and the expansions will add also great features), so get it... waiting for the incoming 6th chapter.

Just a good sequel

ZippaLip | April 15, 2011 | Review of Commandos 2: Men of Courage

Commandos 2 is a good sequel. Pros: the graphic improvements (you can now enter into the buildings), more details (you can search into buildings, there's also some pieces of maps to unblock bonus levels) , good simulation of 3D effects (the game is still isometric), new gameplay features (such as the noise when yo move that can be heard by the enemies), new characters and abilities (for example the thief and his dog), new locations worldwide (including the Asian front against the Japanese). The weaknesses are: only 10 missions and the difficulty is easier. You can complete the mission in a faster way, the deep exploration is optional, only if you want discover maps or special items. In fact now you can act more whit “Rambo style”: killing the enemies in action instead of catching them whit stealth tactics, so the atmosphere of the original Commandos is somehow gone. But overall is a good game.

A challenging addition

ZippaLip | April 13, 2011 | Review of Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty

Beyond the call of duty is the first and only expansion for Commandos. It adds several new mission (not as many as the first however) and new features such as weapons, items (you can use stones or cigarettes against the enemies!), location, vehicles and also a special female spy character. But the difficulty is higher: if you loved the first get it, only for the bravest!

An unique ww2 tactical experience in pc games

ZippaLip | April 12, 2011 | Review of Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines

Commandos is a rare games whit few comparisons (only sequels, not at the level of this first game, and some imitations such as the good “Desperados”) in the pc games world. The players can control a squad of men in the ww2 missions whit an isometric view, using their equipment and abilities, peculiar of each commando. The missions are very detailed, sometimes very hard and you need an accurate precision to complete your goals. Nowadays Commandos is well know to be a masterpiece in the history of pc games, if you haven't played it yet... let's go!

A step back...

ZippaLip | April 12, 2011 | Review of Sid Meier's Civilization® V

Civ V is a disappointment for some reason. The first is the gameplay so simplified (maybe is the influence of the console conversion?) whit many elements gone or made easier and others confused (combat system). The graphic is detailed but heavy for many systems (turn loadings are veeery long!). The AI is stupid and the diplomacy is even worse than the others Civ games (that was one of the weakest point of the series). The DLCs are expensive and often useless (paying for adding just a new country???). Not all is bad and I hope that in the future a real expansion (not a DLC) can man things better, but there isn't the developers attention and cure for details like the others civ's games . For the moment let's play Civ 4 and its add on!

The best Civilization game ever!

ZippaLip | April 11, 2011 | Review of Sid Meier's Civilization® IV Complete Cap

Civilization IV complete is surely the best in this epic series because the 5th installment is not as good. This game has all the element that make the series one of the most famous and praised in pc games: turn-based strategy, simulation, war, diplomacy, control of the map, a lot of ages, religions, cultural influence, wonders, technology and unit so you can revive the history of mankind. The graphic is very beautiful even nowadays (it was released in 2004). In the complete edition you have also the two expansion packs (“beyond the sword” especially add great features) and Colonization (a sort of spin-off), you have also many special scenarios and mods (some made by fans), so the duration of this game for single player can be very very long! There's also multiplayer. And the main music theme have recently received a Grammy award! If you want the real Civilization experience buy it!

Original and funny game, but not for everyone

ZippaLip | April 11, 2011 | Review of Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim

Majesty 2 has an original mix between an RTS gameplay whit some elements of GDR and simulation too. The player is a king of a fantasy reign but he control no units he can only give orders and make quest for the heroes, there is also a small economy part. Graphic is good and simple but maybe a bit old for 2009 (is similar to Age of empires 3, or worse), even if it can work on every system. The game is very humouristic whit strange situation and a general parody of the fantasy games. Sometimes can be hard, especially the final missions, and the campaign is not so long but it has multiplayer. So think a lot if you want to buy it, maybe it's not a game fit for you.

The real heir to classics FPS

ZippaLip | April 9, 2011 | Review of Painkiller Black Edition DNS

If you play this game you will revive the arcade atmosphere of the first FPS of the 90's such as Doom or Quake 1. The story is an optional, you will need no brain, only kill tons of enemies, search treasures, power up, secret areas, complete the goals to receive bonus cards and go to next checkpoint and kill another wave of enemies. The arcade spirit is amazing , the graphic look good even today and the pyshics too (notice that the producers are not a famous and rich company!). The expansion add more fun, and all the level are well designed (well, not all because sometimes you get lost for some checkpoints) such as for the double-function weapons. If you want fun buy it, if you want deep story or you get frustrating in mass killing only go onto another games.

High potential for an original story

ZippaLip | April 9, 2011 | Review of Assassin's Creed

The best thing of this game is surely its amazing story (whit a particular connection between past and present) along whit the setting (middle age and the crusade) that's inusual and different from the abused fantasy or modern wars. The graphic is very good, the player will live the wonderful city or country location and the controls imput (mouse and keyboard) are well balanced even for a pc-action game. The game has a high potential not expressed at his maximum (maybe in the sequel that i haven't played yet) because of some repetivie mission and sometimes lacks of interation. But is a good game even for the players that dislike console conversion.
