Not a great port of not a great game

duke1212 | June 15, 2013 | Review of Sonic Adventure DX STEAM - PC

I'm a die hard Sonic fan but even I can admit when it has its mess ups. Sonic Adventure is pretty amateurish looking and feeling, definitely not the worst Sonic game ever made but comparing the production values of Adventure 1 to Adventure 2 is like comparing an Alpha game concept to a fully fledged title in retrospect. In 2004 they ported the game to PC as the Director's Cut and made out pretty decently as a PC port, but for some reason they decided to change the Steam version to the much inferior console port which has bug issues, locked resolution and is overall pretty amateur. If you still like Sonic Adventure you'll live through it but otherwise stick to SA2 instead which is much better in almost every way.

An incredible port of a timeless classic.

Sonic CD is often heralded as the best 2D Sonic game by some people, and while opinions are always subjective it's easy to see where they're coming from with this game. Sega's porting jobs have been notably poor lately, but this one goes above and beyond the call of duty. Sixty frames per second, widescreen support, the ability to unlock Tails as playable, and two soundtracks you can switch on the fly. Christian "Taxman" Whitehead really shows off his programming ability with this title. Gameplay wise, it's a Sonic game focused more on the platforming aspect, and while speed is definitely still a major component, you'll often find your self slowing down or even backtracking to find various secrets. Whether or not you prefer this kind of Sonic game is purely subjective, but as a "platformer" game in a broad definition, it stands out as one of the greats.
