Good and Bad. Fun but shallow.

i6ix | Sept. 26, 2014 | Review of Gauntlet - PC

Good: It is fun, with the right group of friends. First realize this remake is supposed to be like the original gauntlet games, not gauntlet legends. If that's okay with you, you may enjoy this title. Hack and slash goodness. Plenty of time spent outnumbered by hoards of enemies. Satisfying abilities depending on who you select to play. Bad: But you will only enjoy it for so long. It's now known to be pretty short, pretty repetitive. This game has no built in chat what-so-ever (not even text). It does have character expressions you can activate with the d-pad if you are using a controller or with keyboard hotkeys. Those could be helpful I suppose. I was sad that the potions are only for trinkets. The trinkets are cool but I miss the potion "novas" we enjoyed as kids. It particularly sucks through the first stage when you have no trinket so you just collect worthless potions that disappear at the end of every level. Additional Notes: Only one person can play each character, leading to some unhappiness. The worrier, in our opinions, is the weakest link. Kind of basic fighting style, no block ability, charge ability is really slow to perform. The valkerie is awesome. Shield is a little too power at blocking / reflecting, and throwing it is pretty sweet for a nice chain kill, other than it sometimes chains too far and hits food. Her spear charge is also awesome, going through enemies. The archer seems weak at first, but he's actually my favorite. His ability to roll past everything is nice, and dropping bombs along the way can clear large areas. Soon with some experience you'll gain the ability to shoot the bombs attached to a skill shot, which can also help (though smaller explosion). His auto-attack doesn't hurt generators, but his bomb and skill-shot can do decent damage to them. The wizard is just totally different. He is basically plucked from Magicka and dropped into the game. His spells are made from short elemental combinations (just... like... magicka...). But he is pretty cool, and very useful for the party. The lack of character customization sucks the life out of the game in my opinion. I really wish this would have been more like Gauntlet Legends was on nintendo 64, however, I knew it wasn't. For what it is, its a decent game. But it has plenty of room for improvement. With the overall lack of content, it feels like a third of a game, so it is appropriate that it costs about the third of a regular title. If you are a fan of old gauntlet, you'll enjoy it.

A solid game, but nothing extraordinary.

i6ix | March 15, 2013 | Review of Guild Wars 2 Digital Edition NA (1) - PC

So, it's a solid game. Nice visuals, smooth gameplay mechanics. Fun enough. I would recommend anyone who is really into MMO's to give it a try. However, it still has a shallow feel in my opinion. Despite the attempts to make the game feel like you actually have an effect on the world, the dynamics involved are incredibly short-lived and repetitive. I don't blame them, it's an MMO, that's generally how the world functions so that others can come and experience the quests, etc. However, it still has that glassy feeling of separation between you and the game. The pvp can be fun. I can't say if I like it better than battlegrounds in the other mmo that many play... The skills and characters are alright. The story line adapting to your choices can be somewhat interesting, although I found myself detached from that as well. The music can almost be too soothing. I sometimes almost fell asleep because of the pretty nature around me and the calm sounds. Navigating the larger cities can be painful. Although, I do enjoy searching for the hidden objects, finding a way up on top of a building to grab them. Overall, if you've played other MMO's, this will feel similar. Go to an area, talk to someone, finish their quests. Rinse and Repeat. However, if you are looking for a new fresh MMO to move to from another game, this is a solid release.

Addictive, can't stop playing until you suddenly... stop.

i6ix | March 15, 2013 | Review of Borderlands 2 NA post - PC

This game is intense. If you had any positive feelings towards the first, this one surely steps up it's game. It has a much more polished feel, completed feel to it. The graphics are great, the characters are funny and fun to play. My favorite is the Siren ;) My friends and I literally played this daily for a least a month. By that point, we had all pretty much maxed out our potential. Unfortunately, we were able to walk through some of the expansion content without much challenge, so it stopped there for us. However, this title is surely worth the price, I recommend it to anyone who wants a fps/rpg combined feel. It's fast, fun, and pretty.

A Unique experience if you have the stomach!

i6ix | March 15, 2013 | Review of Mirrors Edge NA ORIGIN - PC

The Good: A unique, fast paced game that will surely keep your blood pumping with it's fast pace and vivid visuals. The whole emulation of free-running can be incredibly entertaining on it's own, with the addition of this very cool main character you will surely enjoy the ride. However, a ride it surely is. The Bad: IF YOU GET MOTION SICKNESS: be prepared. Sit back from the screen a bit. Take breaks. This game made me feel ill a few times, because of the nature of the game. It was still a great experience. But if fps makes you ill, this will likely as well. Lastly, the title is short; That may be good or bad.

Beautiful Game with an Interesting Experience

i6ix | March 7, 2013 | Review of Trine - PC

To begin, this game is beautiful. The graphics are inspiring, and they hit even harder when you realize this is an indy title. The storyline is interesting enough to keep you engaged. The game itself is a little short, but not in a bad way. The three characters that you can switch between freely each have their own perks. The brawn of the knight, the Brain of the Wizard and the Cunning of the Archer. You will find situations that call upon the strength of each character. The one area I will say that this game falls short in is with the enemies you face. Though primarily a puzzler/platformer, the combat can be a little too simple. I would also say the replay value of this game is on the low end. Overall, it's a wonderful title and you get a great experience for the price.
