More of the Same, but barrels of fun

muddykumb | Sept. 8, 2014 | Review of Dead Rising 3 - PC

Dead rising 3 is more of the same of what we know, and that isn't a bad thing at all. Let me start by pointing out the negatives, at the time of release there are a few random frame rate issues and accessing the steam in game overlay can cause the game to freeze. They are my main two faults with this game. Saying this the game was very playable apart from these minor two annoyances. Anyway, onto the story, which is your bog standard escape the zombie infested city, so if you're looking for a masterpiece is storytelling this isn't the game for you. The single player game took me around 29 hours to complete (with the side missions and looking for the collectables) If you don't fancy playing on your own then you can play the whole story in Co-op mode online. So the story is bog standard, but that doesn't matter as the gameplay is fantastic, and that's the important thing. There are over 300 weapon combos to make and dozens of vehicle combos, most of which are a lot of fun to use. There's a shed load of zombies in this game, on screen at any one time you can have around a thousand and killing them is as satisfying as ever. Dead rising 3 is nice and gory, beheading, dismemberment and disembowelment, everything a good zombie game should have. The vehicles and weapons feel good to drive and use, and as stated before there's no shortage of choice. I found dead rising 3 a lot easier than its predecessor. Although the gameplay is great fun i have a few bugbears with the friendly AI, they will walk in front of you while you're firing at zombies and they also take their time getting into your vehicles. Dead rising 3 has pretty decent graphics, nothing groundbreaking but solid nonetheless. There are a few minor issues with pop in objects, but they're so rare it's barely worth mentioning. Taking all into consideration maybe Dead rising 3 deserved to be scored at less that 8/10 on release, however it's just too much fun. If you can overlook some frame rate issues here and there and sometimes irritating friendly Ai, then dead rising 3 is something you should defiantly check out. Top stuff.

An absolute masterpiece

muddykumb | Aug. 13, 2014 | Review of The Last of Us - PlayStation 3

This is something special. You feel like you've been dropped into 28 weeks later. The last of us is a genuine masterpiece, atmospheric, beautiful, addictive. Let me start by saying the levels in The Last Of Us are absolutely stunning, they have been brilliantly crafted down to the smallest detail such as a cobweb under a rusty old van. You really feel like you're in an apocalyptic world. The last of us reminds me of half life 2, and that's a very good thing. The combat is fantastic, it feels real, you feel like just another vulnerable human trying to survive and that's why it's so much fun. You have to think while you fight, you can't just go around killing rambo style. The story is great, if you enjoyed the film 28 days later you'll love this. I wont say too much for fear of spoiling it. Graphically the game is still beautiful, the world feels so real and alive, coupled with a soundtrack that can send tingles up your spine it really makes for something special. The voice acting is superb, and i mean it. The actors bring the characters and the world in general alive, it's oscar worthy stuff. All in all, you have to play this game. PS3's are pretty cheap nowadays, so it's worth buying one just for this game. Superb

muddykumb | Aug. 3, 2014 | Review of The Witcher II Assassins of Kings - PC

Where can i start? This game is an absolute gem. What makes this game great is the story, without a good story a game isn't worth playing. The witcher 2 grips you and leaves you with choices to make, some of which aren't exactly easy to make, the game will split halfway down the middle depending on who you decide to accompany, i wont say any more for fear of spoiling it. The characters are well voiced and believable. You can tell the developers put alot of time and attention into this game. The game iteslf is still pretty good looking and runs smoothly, there are some stunnong scenes and settings. The combat system is just your basic hack slash and block, with 6 spells (ards) to use aswell. Overall this is a fantastic game that you must play.

The crowning jewel in Telltale's collection.

muddykumb | July 27, 2014 | Review of The Wolf Among Us - PC

This game will claw you in untill the ending. Seeing characters from your childhood coming back as a right bunch of yobs is never dull. The story will grip you, the graphical style is fantastic and the characters are very well voiced. The characters are all very intresting, this game is a real breath of fresh air. A comic style noir fantasty world, we don't get that every day do we? The Wolf among us allows you to portray Bigby (the protagonist) however you wish. Playing the game as the American wolf version of 'life on mars' Gene hunt is something to behold, as are the choices you're given. I loved how the game allowed me to play as a double hard, stone hearted dective who wouldn't give a second thought to roughing up his suspects and smashing their gaffs up. I loved this game, i was gutted when i finished it so i really hope telltale make a second series. Having played the walking dead which is exellent i have to say The Wolf Among Us towers above it.
