The Bat Simulator

vinelander | Dec. 8, 2012 | Review of Batman Arkham Asylum Steam - PC

There is no better way to say it: This is the Batman Simulator. If you sit down, turn off the lights, and put on some headphones you truly get a sense of being Bruce Wayne. There's a certain weight to the game. The batarangs feel like you're throwing something solid. Perching up on a gargoyle gives you feeling of hunting your prey. Putting you in the mindset would already be a huge step for any developer, but they layer on even more by really making you feel trapped on Arkham. The odds are hundreds to one but it's OK. You're Batman. In regards to controls, I think the game definitely takes use of a controller. Everything is mapped well and enables you to use gadgets in combat, though not as intuitively as I'd like. Still, the free flow combat they use has been cribbed by other games, and I think that's the best stamp of approval. Now go, Dark Knight.

A portrait of my childhood gaming

vinelander | Dec. 8, 2012 | Review of Bastion - PC

The moment I got into Bastion, I was immediately pulled back to my parent's basement as my brother and I played through Secret of Mana. I think it's the variety of weapons and your ability to play the game the way you want it. I've personally always been a range fighter, so by the end of the game I had chosen the dual pistols and the carbine. However, if you like to get up close and personal, there are plenty of options for you. The real time narration is the other big selling point of this game. The voice is just perfect. While the narration might impact others differently, to me it reminded me of the times my friends and I would joke around and give some real time rendition of whoever was playing at the time. The game is beautiful, the combat is tight and varied, and I am certain I'll breaking the game out again when my son gets a bit older.
