A game that is worth your money.

zachprkr | Aug. 17, 2013 | Review of Spec Ops: The Line

Going into Spec Ops: The Line, I had big expectations. I keep reading about how amazing the story was and how people just walked away in aw. Well after playing I can say that while this is a fun and entertaining game, it doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

Gameplay wise, Spec Ops reminds me a bit of Tomb Raider and Gears of War. It is a third person shooter and you have the ability to take cover on almost all of your surroundings. The controls are great and responsive and the covering aspect works great. In the beginning I really enjoyed the fire fights and battles, but after sometime this grew mildly repetitive and the respawning enemies became very frustrating.

I know everyone recommends this game for the story, but overall I felt it was your standard war story with a twist. They flesh out the characters well and the story is always progressing, but there just seemed to be missing. I also felt the ending was pretty cliché and mildly predictable.

Overall it is a decently fun game and the story is good enough to keep you wanting to play. I finished it in a few sittings, but I don’t see myself going back for multiplayer or second play through.

Good Challenging Platformer

zachprkr | Aug. 6, 2013 | Review of Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams

Being a huge fan of old school platformers, I really wanted to love this game. After sinking a lot of time into this game, I realized it frustrated me more than I enjoyed it.

The gameplay is quite simple. It is Super Mario brothers with a twist. You controller a single character that can be switched between two sisters, each with their own special ability. The controlling of each one works flawlessly. And the game has excellent controller support

The beginning levels are a blast. They are simple and the puzzles are not too difficult to figure out on your first play through. It is the later levels where I was really losing my mind. There are parts where there is no way other than to die multiple times to figure out what to do. There are checkpoints you revert to and you have unlimited lives so it is not the big of a nuisance but it can still be frustrating.

The jumping on top of enemies is also very finicky. There are countless times that I felt I land directly on an enemy or a little off to the side and the game would register it as a death. I got to the point where I would ignore killing enemies and just jump over them because I was too worried of hitting them in that small sweet spot that guaranteed a kill.

Also the collecting of all the crystals is almost impossible. In the beginning I really wanted to try my best to explore everything and find every crystal. With multiple routes to take and levels being quite large, It became clear after the first of second level this is not a possibility without making it a chore.

Overall it is a decent game. A very challenging platformer, but is probably not for everyone.

Fun multiplayer game that you can quickly jump in and out from.

zachprkr | Aug. 6, 2013 | Review of Awesomenauts

Not being familiar with MOBA’s I was not sure what I was getting myself into when I bought this game. Listening to other reviews I took the dive and decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed!

Awesomenauts on the outside looks like a cute, fun game, but underneath it is a deep, competitive, and challenging game. It has taken me dozens of hours to become familiarized well enough with a few characters to be useful for my team. There are plenty of different power ups for every character that they can be played a variety of different ways to best suit the situation.

The unlocking and leveling up system keeps you wanting to play. In the beginning it was mildly annoying as many of the better characters and power ups are locked, but they become available rather shortly if you play enough games.

Overall it is really fun game that you can easy jump in and out of. It is very team based, so prepared to lose a lot as having one weak link or a bot really puts you at a disadvantage. For the low price tag, I highly recommend giving it a go!

Amazing game that will keep you engaged for days

zachprkr | Aug. 6, 2013 | Review of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition (NA)

Skyrim was one of the most engrossing games I have played in years. The world and the depth of story is amazing. My first play through I was 40 hours in before I even started the main story. Exploring the vast areas and jumping into random dungeons kept me going for hours.

I have played the game with 3 different characters and the game felt completely different each time. The customization that you can achieve really changes the gameplay and makes each go through completely different. Once I was a stealthy assassin, the next a hammer welding brute and finally a mage. Each character had their own strengths and weaknesses that made me rethink how to play the game.

The graphics are amazing, the story is decent enough to keep you going, the Elder Scrolls lore will have you reading random books everywhere you go and the combat is well polished and enjoyable. This is a must play!

Very fun game but not without its flaws

zachprkr | Aug. 6, 2013 | Review of Tomb Raider

This is a great game without its flaws. The story will grab you from the beginning. It is interesting, different and always engaging. This is a completely different Lara Croft then the previous games and I always wanted to keep playing to see how the character progressed.

Graphically the game is also stunning. In the open world the plants, the back drops, and buildings all look fantastic. When you go into caves and buildings, the detail in them is also amazing.

Where I feel the game feel short was with the combat. When you have your large battles, enemies will just keep spawning. You can plan out how to take them down, but the moment you kill one another will come running from a hall way or jump on to a zipline. Also, they throw every type of enemy at you at once. You could be facing a sniping bow user, dynamite thrower and a melee enemy all at once. The only way to make it through is to constantly roll around and pray they don’t hit you. While this wasn’t horrible and only applicable in some situations, I still found myself pulling out my hair wishing I played the game on easy after the tenth death.

Where the game does excel is in the exploration and platforming. Running around the island exploring tombs, finding relics, and searching for GPS items was an absolute blast. The platforming was also extremely well done. The system is very responsive to your actions and is forgiving if you make small mistakes. Part of me wishing for a Tomb Raider where there is no fighting and just exploring now...

Overall it is a great game! It was a good challenge, controller support was flawless and the multiplayer still has me playing the game now. I would highly recommend this game.

Fantastic racing game that anyone can enjoy

zachprkr | Aug. 5, 2013 | Review of DiRT 2

I was a massive fan of DiRT on the Xbox 360 and never got around to playing the sequels. When I saw that GreenManGaming had such an excellent deal on them, I couldn’t resist buying them. After playing through DiRT 2, going back in time I would pay full price for the game.

DiRT 2 is just like its predecessor. The graphics are beautiful. The details in the car and the environment are top notch. Every location feels new and different and the scenery never gets boring.

The gameplay is also great. There is a variety of different types of races that alternate so you are never doing the same thing over and over. One race might be a rally, the next a time trial followed by a standard race. This made the game more enjoyable to me as it never felt repetitive.

The only issue I had with the game was when I was using a controller. The steering is extremely tight with the default settings. It took me a good dozen races to finally hone in on a perfect set up that didn’t feel like the slightest touch would send my car veering into the walls.

If you are a racing fan, I could not recommend this game enough. I’m not and I still find this series very fun and can’t wait dive into DiRT 3 and Showdown.

Great Game. A must play if you haven't previously!

zachprkr | Aug. 5, 2013 | Review of FINAL FANTASY VII

I first played this game when it was on the Playstation and was so happy when it was announced for the PC.

Everything about the game is top notch. Great story, engaging battle system, and amazing world to explore. Graphics are dated, but it doesn't deter from the rest of this amazing game.

Highly recommended!
