dumbed down excellence

zmally | Aug. 13, 2011 | Review of Sid Meier's Civilization® V

The Civilization series is fantastic, with its main games and many spinoffs, there are probably around 30 games in total, most of which have won numerous awards. Civilization is fantastic, but sadly not as good as its predecessors in my opinion. The graphics look amazing, particularly the cutscenes, but unfortunately I feel as though the game has been simplified somewhat. Several features are missing, you can no longer stack units, and there are several noticeable bugs. The game could happily be a console game, rather than PC. It has carried over new features from Civilization: Revolution and could easily be controlled with a gamepad, had the developers thought about it. However, if you are a newcomer to the game, Civ5 is fantastic. It isn't as deep as the previous entries to the series, it looks great and it can still keep you hooked for hours. Don't get me wrong, it is a brilliant game, both as a sequel and on its own. It's easy to get into, and difficult to master. It's easily one of the best strategy titles out there today, it's accessible and very enjoyable, with lots of DLC potential. And the fact it's Steamworks can only be a good thing!
