A Game for the Past

Avernum: Escape From The Pit can easily be put into a single word, and that is "Adventure." But that wouldn't do it justice. At a single glance, Avernum: Escape From The Pit seems very old, and the style is dated to possibly the 90s. But do not let looks fool you. Avernum: Escape From The Pit can easily deliver hours upon hours, eventually adding to dozens of hours of game play. The easiest way to compare this game, using a popular game, would most likely be a single player Runescape. In the world of Avernum, you find yourself thrown into the depths of hell for seemingly nothing at all. You have but one thing in mind, somehow find your way back and exact your revenge. You come across many along the way, many of those who cross the powerful in the surface are thrown into the underground world. You, along with three custom built companions, will face the many forces evils and pre-established factions. Taking on many quests, and optional side quests, you choose your own road to how your game ends. This game will be challenging even on the easiest settings. So for those up for a challenge, save often, and prepare to determine your own fate in a world of fantasy and unknown.

Good upgrade to a classic game

Avernum is a updated version of Exile:Escape from the Pit. A fantastic story driven RPG about outsiders in a strange land. You can customize you team to how you play with hours of good times. The downside is the inability to shift the view angle, which makes using the keyboard commands a little difficult. There is a good sized demo available from the spiderweb website. If you've been a fan of these types or have played any of the others in the series, you won't regret this.

Review from a Long Time Avernum fan

This is a great remake of a classic game that everyone should play. I was soo happy when I saw this on sale. A great game that I thought I would never see on on a digital platform because it was just too good. Although you can't play as the nephilim or slithzerikai like in prevous versions of the game, which is a bit sad as those races were really fun to play and beats playing as a human any day. Still a good remake of a classic game though, highly recommend.

A proper game

This is a proper game, with none of the namby-pamby nannying that a lot of "modern" games force on you. You can actually make your own characters! This is one of the games where you can actually look past the graphics, because underneath is some rich gameplay and a fantasy storyline. Take a game like this one and spruce the graphics up a bit (adding things like zoom and more animations), and you'll have a 100 scoring title.

Nice old-style GDR

Avernum: Escape From the Pit is an RPG-style-traditional occidental, developed by Spiderweb Software. In the wake of the classics of good vintage, the player must control their own party of characters through the winding tunnels of Avernum, an underworld, or rather a veritable prison built under the earth's crust, where they are confined to the political enemies of the tyrant emperor Hawthorne. Overall this Avernum: Escape from the Pit proves to be a good old-fashioned RPG: excellent setting and exploratory component, excellent longevity, and narration over the top. If you are fans of this genre will not have problems to like it. For everyone else who would like to give it a chanche, remember that the price is a good buy, especially if you can look beyond the interface problems and pathfinding.

Excellent reboot of a classic franchise

Back in the 1990's Spiderweb Software created a little known PC RPG gem called Exile: Escape from the Pit. Several great sequels followed in the coming years before being recreated with a new graphics engine but the same solid gameplay, this game was known as Avernum. What we have before us is a second re-imagining of the original game which is reflected in the title of the game. The gameplay is very good, the story original and interesting with multiple endings, the graphics have been improved again, not on level with any big budget title you would see today but a great effort for a tiny studio. It is an excellent game and you will get your money's worth for certain, there is a lot of content to explore and you will find yourself wanting to play the sequels of the original games to see what happens next
