This is basically what Gothic should have been after Gothic 2. Up to this day the graphics are still pretty nice because everything is handcrafted and not automatically generated. That makes the world unique and fun to explore. It might be rough around some edges but it never bothered me at all and there are some nice lighting effects when sunrays glare through the trees. Also, I think this game has one of the most realistic nighttime experiences. Because when it's dark, it's dark. Really hard to see anything and torches only shine in a certain radius making it even more difficult to see anything outside that light radius. Just like in real life when your eyes get accustomed to the nearby light source.
Combat is far from perfect, because it's slow and sometimes very demanding. But it's what Gothic always was like and a combat system like the one from Darksiders or similar games just wouldn't fit in. You may hate it, but it fits the game.
So, Risen is kinda the Gothic 4 we've been waiting for. If you like Gothic 2 or even Gothic 3 (without all the bugs), this is a no-brainer. Buy it, love it. I had a lot of fun with it and it took me around 50h to complete it. If you've never played Gothic, you might have to open up to a whole new experience because I don't know any other game that is like Gothic or Risen.

Risen is very similar to the Gothic series (mainly 3) and improves on a lot of the problems the series had (namely the clunkiness of the gameplay). Risen is quite polished and epic in scope, however it falls short in nearly every aspect.
Its graphics are alright. Being lenient is important, but this game fits between the awkward transition from low poly to high poly games (low definition, high definition). The environments are lush and beautiful, but the character animation and detail is severely lacking.
Its gameplay is straightforward and the sluggishness of the past Gothic games is improved upon here.
The story is decent and enough to keep you going, but unless you're a huge fan of the Gothic series you will most likely play a few hours and never touch this game again. Which, for the asking price, may not be that bad of a thing.

If you are a fan of RPGs definitely know the Gothic series, Risen is the spiritual heir and takes it all the best. There are pirates, tropical island, the catacombs full of treasures. Buy the game and disappear for a few hours from the eyes of friends and family. Risen calls!

An interesting game from the developers of the Gothic franchise. The Gothic games were considered excellent but flawed with bugs by some but mediocre by others. If you liked the Gothic games you'll surely find something to like in Risen even though its story isn''t as grand or interesting as the one in the Gothic series. However you have an entire island to explore and some choices to make regarding which side you'll support in the game (different sides mean different fighting styles and different character development).
The enemies you'll fight are the usual animals and undead you'll find in other games of this kind and the graphics are a bit mediocre but the game is quite good even though the ending could be better. Overall an interesting experience especially if you buy it cheap on one of the sales for 5$.

A solid RPG, with a lot of atmosphere. The combat system is at times not so responsive as one might wish for, in a game that requires you to master your keyboard in order to just survive. The upside of that is of course the good old Gothic feel. This game is difficult. The enemies are really dangerous, and your skill and your character's, will determine the outcome of combat. For some, this will be a let down, but for the rest of us, it heightens the feeling of accomplishment. As with any quest-based RPG, there are some glitches with the quests, but all-in-all I feel that it works out very nicely. A negative point is the horribly stereotype view of women, but to be perfectly fair, most role playing games on PC tend to be massively sexist.

Risen is an RPG game made by Piranha Bytes, makers of Gothic series.
I like good RPG games where you can wander and discover places. So I did end up playing Risen. Gameplay is bit better than in Gothic 3 and does not bother you while you are playing. Some gamers tell that combat in Gothic 3 was so terrible, that they could not play it. I did not find it bad at all, so there is posibility that you don't like this one any better.
Graphics are good for an old game and surely not reason not to play this. However animations are little bit rough.
For those gamers that are looking for new RPG series, Risen is the one you want to give a try.

This game is like what Gothic 3 should have been but never was. The clunkiness of the original was removed, the useless bits were taken out, and it was really just polished into a better game. No bugs I found in the game, at least so far.
The graphics are not very good - the character models are like stone dolls - but you don't have to waste your time staring at them as you'll be out and about adventuring.
The AI is better, but not amazing - they can trick you into lowering your guard in combat by simply calling your shot. But you can also just button mash and usually win.
The plot is more interesting than G3 in my opinion. I won't ruin it, but the island itself has importance in the story, and it's good enough to keep you playing. And of course the RPG elements are basic but still good.

Risen is a good RPG. Basically it looks like the first two Gothic, but with different character and location. The game is divided in two parts, at the beginning it's a good RPG where you can level up your character improving its combat or magic skills. After you have explored the island and the various location and you will choose to join one of the faction present on the island, the game become quite linear, similar to an action game and become too repetitive. Even if the second part of the game is not good like the first, Risen remains a good RPG and a must buy in particular if you loved Gothic 1 and 2

This game is from the developers of the famous RPG franchise "Gothic", so if you played their games before you will like Risen.
The plot takes place in a fantasy island surrounded by storms with a lot of strange creatures and monsters, these things are very original if you compare them from other fantasy games.
This isn't a game where you level up fast and find powerful weapons easily, until you start to get some better equipment and training, each battle requires skill because you need to dodge and parry the attacks but each encounter with enemies are rewarding.
The quest system is interesting, sometimes you will need to choose decisions that can be good or evil but that isn't clear and you will find a lot of surprises at the end of the game, the main story is very interesting.
This RPG has a lot of hours of gameplay with a beautiful environment and great plot, Risen will not disappoint you.
