Challenging and tons of fun

Risen is one of those games that is weighed down by bugs but still manages to shine through. You play as the unnamed man who turns out to be the hero who's supposed to save the world. Despite the cliché, the game's story is quite good and contains a lot of side quests that add more depth throughout the journey.

As I mentioned, the game does feature a few bugs that may or may not affect you, if you're lucky they're barely noticeable, and if not then pull through anyways, it's worth it! The overall scenery is great and the world feels alive, the music is excellent and fits well with the setting. The voice-acting felt a bit stiff at times though.

This is a great game despite its problems and I consider it one of my favorite fantasy-rpgs. Well recommended!

Awesome gameplay

but let down by the voice actors. Although the story and the gameplay are very well put together, so much to do, so many people to meet, so many challenges to complete, you will find yourself loosing track of time to this game.

I got this game with dead Island Riptide, but I think it's actually pretty cool. It's solid, engrossing, and well presented. Overall, one of the better PC RPGs

If you played Gothic, this game is just for you. It's very similiar, have similiar combat system and also have unnamed hero. You travel accross a big island to uncover your past and to find out how you get there. As I said a combat system is very similiar to that from Gothic, every one should know it and like it. It's a great RPG game, and it's worth buying.

Do you love to loot? Do you love exploring? This game has all of that and more..

Game play is decent and the graphics are beautiful for how old this is game is. If you like games like Fallout 3 or Fallout Vegas then this would be one you could get into.

Over all simply put this is a great time killer game to add to your collection.

A good rpg

Having spent a considerable amount of effort collecting every herb and mushroom we could find, we must confess that we began to question our sanity. The giant vultures, porcupines and killer butterflies that harassed us as we made our way across the island suddenly seemed a little suspicious.

Were they merely hallucinations? Or perhaps, in a twist akin to something out of Lost, the mysterious island was manifesting our fears as deranged mutant fauna. No, we haven’t been indulging in herbal remedies while on holiday, but rather we have been indulging in a bit of Risen, the latest offering from Gothic developer, Piranha Bytes.

Waking up shipwrecked on a tropical beach, you’re immediately thrown into a world of jungles, temples, caves and other assorted fantasy locales, tasked with figuring out where the hell you are and where you can find something sharp to stab the various things that want to kill you, eat you, or eat you and then kill you.

As stories go, this is far from original, featuring as it does the usual world-threatening ancient evil rising from the depths to, you know, threaten the world, but the tropical nature of the island is something that we don’t see often in the genre. And the island is very, very pretty, with dense jungles, active wildlife and beautifully detailed beaches.

Like many of these strange European RPGs, the detail doesn’t end with the visuals. There are a wide variety of plants to collect and mix potions with, meats to cook with and booze to consume, and a multitude of non-combat skills to appease fans of the survivalist side of RPGs.

The AI meanwhile, though not boasting the complex behavioral patterns of Oblivion or Fallout 3, shows enough life to trick you into thinking that they’re not just brainless lines of scripting, with enemies going as far as to loot your corpse, or eat it, should you balls things up and die. On that note, the combat is functional and smooth, though not the most complex experience, and weapons feel satisfyingly heavy.

All in all, there’s little to find fault with here unless you have a grudge against the Gothic series, or the occasionally crap voiceovers inherent to such games. Risen is a solid, engrossing and beautifully presented RPG that’s well worth your time and money.

Average fun

While you can't count on a very memorable voice acting cast nor story in Risen, what you can however count on is a rich and large world too discover with a lot of side quests and interesting creatures roaming it.

The combat can also be quite awkward and you often find that even the most insignificant wild animal can be a brutal fight in some cases, especially the early stages, so if you are very much into the mechanic aspect of a game then this would not be a keeper. If you do however enjoy a lot of exploring then this game should definitely satisfy you for a one time playthrough, there are also some reasons to replay the game (different factions to choose from) which might seem like a appealing choice for a fan of the game, but I never really found myself to be interested enough to actually boot up the game again once I had finished it.
