Reviews for Magrunner: Dark Pulse

Good but too long for its own good

Magrunner is too long for its own good. But it's a good game that deserved more recognition because it's in many ways similar to Portal and Q.U.B.E. But instead of using portals or cubes you'll be solving puzzles using your Magtech glove, a glove that allows you to magnetize stuff. The puzzles are creative and challenging (most of the times) but there are just too many of them. About 6-7 hours in I got bored. Some of the puzzles just take too long to solve, which, as a result, made me lose interest. Before that happened I actually had a great time with it. If you love FP puzzle games I'm pretty certain you'll love this one, too. It has nice visuals, good gameplay mechanics and a fun story. What's not to love?

This feels familiar

It's a really good puzzler IMO. I like what Portal has spawned. It's hard to talk about without drawing a comparison to Portal. It's not nearly as charming as Portal. The only thing that really irked me about the game was that you were unable to jump if you were carrying a block. Sounds small, but damn it'll anger you. All in all well worth the $ I spent on it.

Inspired from Portal

Magrunner: Dark Pulse tries to swallow the look of Portal with its own mechanics and bold screenplay, Moreover, since it is too much shifted with the game, some puzzles are nice and well twisted and it feels like an original gameplay, unfortunately burdened by too much vagueness in physics and controls. It is far from the big title, Portal.

Fun vs Frustrating

Puzzle games should make sense. Something like should should rely on logic and a well designed game will interpret the majority of possible thought processes that could be going through the minds of its players. Maybe it's just me, but the puzzles in this game simply do not make sense and you'll need a tutorial or two to get through first time. On the plus side, the audio side of the game - that is voice acting, sound effects and music, are all brilliant. Graphics are good, the game is powered by the Unreal Engine 3. The game has an intriguing story based in the world of Cthulhu. Overall, Magrunner: Dark Pulse is a poorly designed game with illogical puzzles forcing the player to use tutorials or help sites to get the game finished. Graphics, music, voice acting and story is top-notch but unfortunately it has followed the trend of puzzle games that end up being significantly less good than the very clear inspiration.

Portal Maybe?

The game is really fun and gives you a really hands on puzzle style. The game is obviously based on portal even to some small points. The graphics are stunning which help to bring the game alive and give it the slight upper hand on valves portal. For the price it's probably worth getting portal from valve as it has a much better story line as well as voice acting however if you already have it then it does go well along side.

Portal Meets Science Fiction!

Magrunner is a puzzle game, but do not fret, there's a story behind this puzzle game that wil test your mind more than the puzzles. The puzzles within Magrunner focus on polarity between objects and at the players will you can change the effect (polarity) of certain objects to help you get from point A to point B. This game will most certainly test your brain and your patience as this is not a trivial puzzle game. Players may be stumped for minutes or hours when figuring out how to traverse the path ahead of them only to find out that they have been going about it all wrong. Along with the puzzles, the other big thing that sticks out with Magrunner is its story. I won't spoil anything about the story, but it is one of the most "out there" stories that you really have to pay attention to or you will just get lost and be confused about your mission or purpose in the game. Magrunner scores high in its puzzle difficulty, but low with the awkward story and lack of character depth to pull the players in. Magrunner is a must try, if only for the puzzle solving gamers out there.

A not so great portal clone.

Magrunner: Dark Pulse is a 3D puzzle game/Portal clone. And they're very open about that. In this game, you have a magnetic glove that allows you to polarize various things around the room to solve the puzzle of how do you get from point A to point B. In between levels, you have to wait in this ridiculous staging area where you're forced to watch holographs that serve as cutscenes when clearly they could have just had the audio running in the background while you solved the puzzles. Pros include good graphics and a slightly engaging story. The puzzles are very well conceived and very challenging; you may need a tutorial video or two to get through the whole game. Cons include framerate drops, a failure to understand that in physics opposites attract (in the game, it's the opposite), a really bent and absurd storyline, and painfully-long and cruel load times. I couldn't get over the failure of physics and the poor programming.

Fresh Game!

This is a fun puzzle game that is "portal-esque" but very different. The game will make you scratch your head and requires ingenuity to succeed rather than twitch reflexes. The art work is great but the story is mediocre so far but I have yet to complete the game. The addition of the C'thulu mythos is an interesting twist. Voice acting is okay and the music is decent. All in all its pleasant distraction but not a must own type of game. I'm so sick of stupid shooters, this game is a fresh air for my lights and a great trainer for my brains. Will recommend Magrunner to everyone who likes to think, puzzles are really nutty, can't wait to get to the last levels.
