Reviews for Rooks Keep [Playfire]

A great game, with a dead community.

If you can find someone to play with you, this is a fun and good looking game of Chess. There is also a mode called Battle Chess which adds another layer of depth, allowing pieces to actually fight their opponent instead of just being taken. If Chess isn't really your thing, they have death matches and other fast paced arena matches. If the community was more active I would recommend this game to people, however playing solo against AI is not challenging (Spamming moves can get you an easy win in Battle Chess). If you can get this cheap, I recommend buying two and giving one to a friend for a good night of chess.

Pretty, but who to play with?

Visuals are among this game's biggest assets. It looks simply great and also plays nice, although it would be nothing new for players familiar with the genre. Still playing a visually appealing game is always a nice thing. The problem with this game was already mentioned in lok0812's review - the game is still very new, so the community of players is very small. Finding real opponents wanting to play a game may be difficult so you may end up playing with bots. If this doesn't discourage you (and some people even prefer this style of gaming) or you want to wait for the community to grow, get the game, as it's a good representative of the arena genre. If it's on sale - give it a try, even if you don't like fantasy combat games too much.

Arena based game

If you have played Chivalry or War of the Roses you will find this game very similar, the melee combat. Similar to the game mentioned, you play against other players/bots in a deathmatch using your melee skills with the system similar in Chivalry;s blocking and attacking. The visuals of the game is top notch and can definitely compete against Chivalry. Gameplay style remains the same to those game. One problem about games like this is its community, if there are no online community for the game, that is pretty much it as these sort of games are online deathmatch so if there are no one to play with you will be constantly playing against bots. Must give it a try if you enjoyed Chivalry or War of the Roses.
