I think you don't even have to debate just buy it if you still don't have it. The game is alive and full of players although it is very old and that's what makes it classic. I have this game for a few years and I still play it, you always can play it again, it's never boring. There are so many modes that you can play just for example: Deathmatch, GunGame, Ski Mode and many more .. if you don't know these modes you can search a video of it and you can be impressed. Completely recommended for every FPS gamer, and In my opinion it's also better to buy the CS:Complete.

Excellent FPS in its day! However, today you could do better...

For its day and age, this was the epitome of good, solid FPS mechanics. No one could justly say that this game, referred to as CS 1.6, was a "bad game." Not only did this set the standard for modern shooters, it has an immense amount of game-modes within that make it interesting for any kind of person to play. Today, I would suggest this game only if you have an outdated computer, though! I would suggest either CS:GO or Counter-Strike:Source over this. Those games are much more active than CS 1.6 and the mechanics aren't too different!

Modern day games ignored and excluded from comparison, there would be no question in my mind that you MUST purchase this game and try it if you're a gamer of any kind.

The Grand-daddy of them all!

Who would've thought the brain-child of two enthusiast modders would give birth to one of most enduring franchises in all of gaming today. Nobody did. Which is why it astounds me that to this day, this game is in the top 10 most played games on Steam today, despite being out for almost 14 years. This is a testament to the timeless appeal of the game. Something that extends beyond the pretty pixels that dictate sales today, and into what gamers desire the most in a FPS. That, my friend, is SKILL.

The game was released in 1999, so the game has aged quite a bit. However, with the updates released by valve over the years, the game looks exceptionally well in an HD resolution. The game was a stunner for it's time and it still looks good today.

The sound is ok for the most part. but it doesn't compare to most shooters today.

Gameplay: This is why people play CS. It's the gameplay and it' perfect blend of skill and luck that causes it to be played gamer around the globe. Nothing feels more satisfying than fragging noobs and verterans alike. 10/10

The game is the most played online FPS game on earth. Enough said.

Classic FPS at its best

If you want a first person shooter with multiplayer, great online communities, and graphics that will run at max on any PC made in the past decade, Counter Strike is the game for you!

There's the traditional hostage mode, there's bomb mode, there's free for all, and there are a ton of custom game modes. Jailbreak servers are pretty fun and usually hilarious.

If you want a game with endless replayability that won't let you down, CS 1.6 is the way to go

Classic online shooting

The original Counter Strike is one of the all time classic online FPS shooters which started just as a mod for Half Life 1. Although sequels have been released since with more up-to-date features, the original Counter Strike has lots to offer if no-nonsense competitive gameplay suits you. The game has very little luck and is mostly skill based and you will need to play well to be successful. For example, if you run around even with the more powerful weapons, a stationed player with even a weaker weapon will likely kill you easily. Spraying and praying also doesn't work very well, forcing you to shoot intelligently in short, controlled bursts. As you can tell from the screenshots above, the graphics are extremely dated but pure gameplay is far more important than visual charm and aesthetics. Besides, if you play properly and concentrate on doing well who cares about graphics? Being an old game, the original Counter Strike is also missing unlockables, experience point gains and level upgrades, something that modern shooters like Battlefield 4 have. At the end of the day, if you want pure no-nonsense online shooting that rewards skill and you don't care about graphics, this is your game. Just be warned though, it is tough!

Old games will be epic everytime

Best mod of history and the most successful and long-lived of all time multiplayer game. Playability and accuracy is unsurpassed and far superior to its predecessors CS: S and CS: GO. And thanks to the AlliedModders community, there is a lot of different mods for zombies, deathmatch, surfing, paintball, gungame, deathrun, Furien, HnS, jailbreak, etc ... the list is almost endless. Counter-Strike is the king of shooters, from 1999 to now, and wish to remain so for many more years.

Classic online FPS at its best

Its hard to believe that Counter Strike had the humble beginnings of being just a simple mod for Half-Life that then got so popular that it became a stand-alone game. If you're looking for rank progression, weapon unlocking and such, then you will be very disappointed as this is a game about being skillful with the weapons you pick at the start of each round. During the rounds, you earn money that you then use ingame to buy new weapons, armor and such from the buy zone area, which is located near where you and your team are spawned. The maps generally have the objective of that a group of terrorists are trying to plant a bomb at a location while the counter terrorists try to stop them. Counter terrorists can win by either killing all the terrorists or disarming the bomb they managed to plant while the terrorists can win by killing all counter terrorists or keep them away from the bomb long enough for it to explode and thus win the round. People still play this game to this day and even have added in mods to the game like zombie survival and such, which only add to the variety. This is a must have for those who are tired of the rank progressions and such that is very VERY common with online shooters these days and just long for something that makes you use what skills you have in FPS instead of the absolute best equipment and such.

Started as a mod and ended being a multiplayer legend!

This game has started as a mod about 13-14 years ago (we're talking about June 1999 to be precise), the same modder didn't expect all this success. The mod has started gaining popularity in the growing multiplayer scene very fast, thanks to this popularity the Game Designer Minh "Gooseman" Le has been employeed by Valve to develop a standalone version of Counter-Strike, in this way Counter-Strike wasn't anymore a simple mod for Half Life but a full featured multiplayer game which many people still play today. The game put you in the shoes of 2 teams: The Terrorists and the Counter-Terrorists, and each team must eliminate all the enemies or completing the map objectives to win the round, the team who has won more rounds when the time runs out wins the entire match. In doing this you'll earn money (e. g. when you kill an enemy or win a round), this money is needed to buy weapons by pressing the assigned key at the start of the match, there are several weapons as rifles, guns, shotguns, grenades etc, but you can't buy weapons from everywhere and you always must go to the "buy zone" to be able to do this. Another thing, if you die you must wait to end of the round before spawning in game again so be careful and stay in cover.

I suggest to try this game (those who haven't played) because it deserve the praise it gets, it's one of the greatest multiplayer shooter ever created, and if you're also into multiplayer FPS, this game it's for you. If you can't get past the outdated graphics (come on guys, it's 13-14 years old, no one can't complain on this aspect) there are updated iterations of the game, such as Counter-Strike: Source or the most recent Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, as you can see there's something for everyone, but give this one a try, it's worth it.
