A Hidden Diamond In The Rough

This game is one of those hidden gems that not many know, but once you found, they can be highly addictive and fun to play. It's a 2-D sidescroller, hack-and-slash, action game. Some like to refer to this game as a "Devil May Cry in 2-D", and to be honest, they're not totally wrong. It's really fast, with detailed animations and designs, easy to play but hard to master. Made by Chinese developers, "RainBlood Chronicles: Mirage" is set in the old China from some hundred years ago, with fantasy elements and Chinese folklore. You have the chance to play with one of two available main characters, although you can switch between the two during the game in real time, but the experience gained by one of them is not shared with the other, and this experience is needed to unlock or level up abilities for each character, so you have to choose wisely. Both characters have different skills and techniques, so it can be a little bit confusing switching between the two during the game since the gameplay can be really fast most of the times. Although you would expect that a game like this would allow you to play the main campaign in co-op with a friend, but this isn't possible. Only after beating the main game a few new modes will be unlocked, and one of those allow you to play with a local friend against enemies and bosses just like the Bloody Palace mode found in some Devil May Cry games. The art is really nicely done, also the sound. Although the soundtrack can be a little repetitive. The controls are good and acceptable, but it's most likely you will need to properly set up the control, especially if you plan to use a gamepad in this game, since the default controls are not the best for these type of games and they're hard to use Unfortunately, the developers left the game project too early. So far is known that they had some issues by the end, left the game and scratched the idea of the planned sequel, so by the end of the game this can be presented very rushed and doesn't resolve everything from the main story. They also left some problems unfixed, most noticeable, the problem of the Steam achievements not unlocking. Before they left, they made a patch to fix this problem and the publisher posted about it in the official Steam discussions forum of the game, but it has to be applied manually over the main installation (is not automatically patched during or after the download/install). If the Steam achievements are important to you, it is highly recommended to apply this patch after the installation and before playing the game for the first time to properly unlock the achievements and in order. More information about this patch and download link can be found here: Despite some problems, the game is really fun to play. If you're a fan of stylish games like Devil May Cry and some other action games in 2-D, this is a good game to have in your library, a hidden gem.

2D Devil May Cry

In Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage you play as Soul and Shang, two assassins from a shady organisation. Your job is to kill all members of a rival organisation while investigation on the disapearance of Jade, one of your teammate. The story is simple and set in a chinese fantasy setting. There is even a flying ship wreaking havoc everywhere it goes. Visually, Rain Blood Chronicles: Mirage is beautiful. It used the Unity Engine to create a grim 2D world where it rains all the time. The soundtrack is also very good. The true strength of the game comes from its gameplay. For you see, Rain Blood Chronicles : Mirage is a Beat'em all game with some platforming sequence a la Shinobi. But the combat are so amazing it's hard to describe. Imagine Devil May Cry gameplay but with the possibility to switch between Dante and Vergil during combos(And Shang plays a lot like Vergil). It's as simple and awesome as that! Like DMC, you've got skills and combos to unlock, items to collect and a scoring system. Like DMC you can perform stylish combos, maintaining the enemy in the air. Like DMC, the game is pretty hard too. Truly, this game is a gem.

Quality 2D hack and slasher.

I bought Rain Blood because it seemed to be a bit like the 2D Castlevania games but it turned out to be much more action oriented. You can switch between two characters while beating up enemies and racking up some insane combos. I had a lot of fun with the local co-op mode as I didn't get too far on my own but I have to point out that there is no online modes. It might not have been the type of game that I was expecting but it still turned out to be a lot of fun.

Hoping for the older parts to be released!

Rain Blood is a saga of Chinese 2d action games with great gameplay and interesting story. I played 'Rain blood: Town of Death' before and it was great, but this one includes a much better combo system, the ability to switch characters on the fly and amazing art. The two characters have a very different feeling, think of them as Dante and Virgil on Devil May Cry 3, one can avoid attacks with fast moves but no blocking, the other can cast spectral swords and use them to deal finishing blows, block or double-jump. Changing characters can make a difference on a boss battle, adding some strategic thinking to the mix. The game allows buying new moves and attacks that can be upgraded, so replaying previously finished levels to gain currency is a must. Great and fun game, i hope they release the older ones, only avilable on Chinese language by now.

Mirage is a 2D action game similar to Mark of the Ninja or Dust. Player transverse through a 2D side scrolling map with one of the 2 characters and combo through enemies for better scores. As the story progress, your character learns new moves to further utilize the combo system. A great addition to this game is the ability to coop with a friend but only limited to local. The story is great and moves at a really good pacing through the game and twists makes it even more surprising and likeable. One of the great game that shouldn't be missed to anyone who enjoy the side scrolling action genre.
