Wonder Boy III Monster Lair is an old platform game. Even if the graphic can't be compared to 2012 games, the gameplay remains good and you can enjoy the classic platform elements in the various levels where you must go to the end of the level fighting enemies and avoiding obstacles. There are also some sections similar to shooting games that introduce a variations in the classic platform gameplay

This is a game that I remember playing almost religiously. Like many games of the time it is a side scrolling platformer with an element of combat. The games hero hops about from left to right cutting enemies down with his sword. Fans of the Wonderboy series will of course notice that this game differs from the first and most famous game. It is true that this game is different with the hero using a sword for most of the game instead of the famous hammer and the setting going from the tropical island to a more fantasy one. What remains the same is the vitality meter that keeps the player moving. As you move through the levels you have to make sure to pick up fruit along the way to fuel the meter at the top of the screen. If it runs out its game over. The standard platforming gameplay is broken up by levels where Leo astride a pink dragon flies around shooting enemies in true shmup fashion. The graphics are great and so is the music, although I did not find it as memorable as in the first game.

It remains an enjoyable classic platformer to this day, and it is as challenging as ever. Its a nice platformer that has pretty good sound and visuals for its day. This is the kind of game you don't see enough of these days, and it remains a great co-operative experience as well. I recommend this game to anyone looking for an old-school platforming game.
