Reviews for Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising
An old but still enjoyable and unique 3rd person RTS hybridLegolas_Katarn | Dec. 8, 2015 | See all Legolas_Katarn's reviews »
"In the year 2012 the Earth was hit by the last thing it was expecting, sanity." A mix between a 3rd person vehicle combat game and an RTS. You scavenge for parts then use them to build ground and air units that you can customize further with additional equipment, armor, etc. Once the vehicle is complete you can either control them yourself or have the AI do it, each craft is assigned one of ten AI profiles, each with a unique voice, lines, and things they are good at. You can monitor their health and they relay their situation to you. The plot and voice acting is entertaining, as is the chatter between the pilots, though they do tend to start talking over each other. Combat is pretty basic and the game and visuals are obviously dated but it is still fun and unique.

this is a very good retro game. reasons i like this game are it has a good style of game play with you being able to control the units and have the real time game play as well. also the story is good for a real time action game. also the graphics are good for the game being 14 years old. the one thing i did not like about it was that it always inverts the y axis for me so i had to go change it to invert the y axis in the controls menu but that is more of a personal preference. so overall i give this game a 90/100 if you buy the game i hope you enjoy it.

Anateus Rising is a RTS/action hybrid, where the player is controlling an carrier and completes missions to ultimately win the war. Only that carrier itself isn't doing much fight, relying instead on units he can produce almost on the fly. The player can at any time take control of a chosen vehicle and play like in third person action game, leaving other units to AI. Or he can use a command menu and play like in Real Time Strategy, ordering units around. Both ways are equally good as AI, while not the best out there, is descent enough to not frustrate player and making him jump like crazy from unit to unit. Graphics may not looks much right now, but gameplay makes for it and Anateus Rising is still enjoyable, despite it's age.

Hostile Waters is my all-time favorite strategy game. For unknown reasons it never became a best-seller and quickly ended in bargain bins instead. As commander of your squad you can either assign AI pilots to your vehicles or take charge of the vehicles directly turning it into a third person shooter. The story is good and nicely captured in the missions (be sure to pay attention to the evolution of the enemy vehicles). Physics and graphics were good at the time but are now thoroughly dated.

Buyers beware, this game is old, and it really looks like it was made 13 years ago. But trust me, this game is still LOADS of fun, even though the graphics are terrible nowadays. While it is a strategy at heart, it mixes different kinds of games, as you can manually control everything on the battlefield. However, what really makes the game such a gem is a command system - while you are piloting something, you can give orders to the rest of your troops. It is hard to explain, but you will get used to it very quick in-game. Even now, Hostile Waters is one of the most innovative and unusual strategy games ever made. You just have to keep in mind that the game is old, and it aged pretty bad in terms of audio/video. If you can get past the graphics and sound you will be pleased.

I remember this generic thing. The game was heavily inspired by Carrier Command and Battle Command, but it's so totally Ground Control. Basically there's some boring story set in "the future" about some alliance of dictators who plan to take over the world (OF COURSE! says Raul Julia as Bison... His last name was Julia, did you guys knew that?) by inventing an alien threat and thus receiving help in creating a bada** carrier with which they obviously turned and waged war against the whole world. They won, and after a bunch of years, the governments unite and plan a retaliation. You are the retaliation. Yes, you... the player. It's a strategy game. You must build all kinds of tanks and other vehicles in order to take over various islands until you win the game. That's it. So, the game looks good, even after so many years, has a good presentation and a clean hud. I can't remember much about the sound, voices and stuff, unless I watch videos to remember and that would be like cheating. Overall, I'd rather get Ground Control over this, but as a score, it's still a 6 out of 10.
