I never had a chance to play original Jagged Alliance game. I started from the best, second game, that was truly amazing. So when I played Jagged Alliance 1: Gold, I had this feeling that it's something interesting. After few hours I knew one thing - it's a great game and start for Jagged Alliance games. If you compare this to the second one, you don't see much differences. Ok, there are few, but it's not like that. Like, hiring mercenaries is still same, defending zones are same, turn based combat is same. Every character have their own voice, nature and when playing, you instantly know "Ah, I know I won't / I will like him/her". It's amazing for game this old to be playable in these times and that there are ideas that were simply amazing. If you are fan of Jagged Alliance 2, then you MUST play this one. Even though it's working on dosbox, it's full playable on new operation systems.

This really was one of those classics but its aged pretty significantly. Wouldn't say its worth playing nowadays. They got the new JA which are similar but with better UI and graphics. I feel like its more tactical than the much raved new xcom so if you really want a turn based tactical shooter I say give the new JA a try and just skip this one.

Old and rusty, but revolutionary

If by any chance you don't know Jagged Alliance, it must be because you are too young to have experienced the game when it was released. But even for somebody who got into video games later, the game can still be interesting and addictive. Of course, later Jagged Alliance games were better, much better, especially JA2 and JA2.5, but the first one is still a golden classic! This is the game which cannot be called anything but a milestone, a revolutionary classic. It offered detailed tactical military game, with a higher level campaign, characters with different traits and characteristics. A choice of weapons with enough differences to really make a difference. If it wasn't for Jagged Alliance, the gaming industry would probably miss one important branch. But fortunately Jagged Alliance was made, and even though it feels old and rusty now, it deserves its place in every gamer's collection.
