Call of Duty was a huge hit when it was first released, but it really picked up a following with Modern Warfare. Regenerating health, finding cover so you weren't immediately pulverized by enemy fire, everything that made that game accessible came from this one, Call of Duty 2. Granted, the game itself still has a somewhat standard campaign, with more of going from level design to level design. But this isn't a bad thing, because the levels themselves are intense and exciting (though you will be holding your ground to hold off Nazi attackers in a few of them. Seriously it happens a lot). The guns feel more powerful and smoother, kills feel more satisfying, the gameplay is more streamlined due to regenerating health and tighter levels giving the game an overall faster feel. I definitely recommend piking this one up. It's worth it.

One of the best WW2 single player campaigns yet

Right after this game came out, World War 2 was starting to end in the FPS market. 2 years later, Infinity Ward did COD4: Modern Warfare and now everyone copies the modern military shooter. But let's talk about COD2. A lot of improvements were made from COD1, like the vehicle segments, regenerating health over healthpacks (which, this was one of the first FPS games to do so). Better handling on the weapons, an intuitive checkpoint system, a legitimately hard difficulty, an actually fun multiplayer mode. I know Call of Duty gets a lot of hate these days, and quite a bit of it is deserving, but they were on top at one point and this is a perfect example of why.
