The prodigal son returns
sycomantis1991 | July 8, 2015 | See all sycomantis1991's reviews »DMC4 had always been an amazing game. Despite its initial backlash, which everyone has gone back on after seeing how much worse it can get, the game is full of cheese one-liners, awesome monsters and bosses, gorgeous environmenta, and some of the best gameplay in the series. Now take that, make it look even better, add three new playable characters, a horde mode, and more missions, smoother framerate, and leaderboards. That's DMC4: Special Edition

An action slash em up game with history and cheese.
Farkonism | July 4, 2015 | See all Farkonism's reviews »It's got Vergil in it now, normally nothing else should need to be said, however since this is a review. The positioning and inputs are a lot stricter than most action games with unique dodges for the various characters, the fighting is rewarding, almost as much as a 2D fighting game due to it's depth. There are now 5 playable characters (Some are easy to use (lady) while others are the more difficult (Dante). If you're use to Dynasty Warriors or other such hack&Slash titles, you WILL have trouble adjusting to the controls due to the complexity for each character, but it will be rewarding once you do. For those that have already played the original it may not be worth it to you unless you really want to play the new characters because the story and majority of the content is identical and LegendaryDarkKnight mode is nothing new as it was in the original as well. Now, as for the new characters themselves: Vergil plays exactly as he did in DMC3 with a new new mechanics. His focus mechanic fits him and his style very well (you lose focus whenever you miss an attack of take damage) and his weapons are his classic trinity (Yamato, Beowulf, Force Edge). However, to use his Dark Slayer style, he has to throw a marker on a target, quite annoying compared to the DMC3 counterpart. Trish is similar to her DMC2 counterpart, with a few additional moves from her DMC1 days. She uses mainly lightning skills and has Luce and Umbra as side arms while calling Pandora. Many of her lightning abilities linger on the ground to be utilized like a fire wall from classic wizard DnD. Lady is a human, so no special demonic powers for her, however, to compensate for this, she's a master marksman/arsenalist making her skills ranged but slower than the others styles of fighting. Generally you herd enemies together and blast them with her firearms since some of them deal area of effect damage. However, this game isn't without it's quirks, if you're brand new to the game you might find the dialogue cheesy, the amount of backtracking is monotonous especially when you switch characters, and no training mode to get your skills down. All in all, this game is worth it if you want some satisfying action.

In the style of the series
Armannn | June 24, 2015 | See all Armannn's reviews »The game features the usual DMC gameplay with pretty good balance between the playable characters that you switch in-and-out of a couple of times during the game. Keep in mind that the graphics are not much better than the ones in the original Devil Man Cry 4 (which had some nice graphics, though it was released in 2008). Capcom, the creator of the great Resident Evil saga, this time went above my expectations. The controls are pretty standard for the DMC series, and I'd recommend you to use the controller instead of the default mouse and keyboard. The map(s) seem to be a bit more detailed (not much though) than in the base DMC4. All the above leads me to say that this is a pretty nice game which you should definitely try if you liked any of the previous games in the series.

The return of the King
Cavalieroscuro | June 23, 2015 | See all Cavalieroscuro's reviews »After DMC, Capcom decided to take a step back and remaster its last "official" Devil May Cry title, DMC4. The Special Edition is really special, since it adds playable Vergil, Trish and Lady, each own with their special tecniques and cutscene. The resolution has been bumped up to 1080p with 60 fps, providing an additional boost to an already well looking game. If you never played DMC4, this is the right time to do it.
