An improvement on Shadow of the Comet but still flawed
Legolas_Katarn | Jan. 29, 2016 | See all Legolas_Katarn's reviews »Call of Cthulhu: Prisoner of Ice is an adventure game with inspiration drawn from Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, it was made after the other Lovecraft inspired game Shadow of the Comet and shares some characters. A lot of exciting things will happen at the start of the game but a sense of dread and urgency are not likely to be the best fits with a slower adventure game where you will be walking around trying to find the correct things to interact with to solve simple puzzles. Voice acting and music are well done, although the continues music can start to get annoying and start to hurt the feel of the game. The hand drawn backgrounds look good but may not correctly represent what the game believes them to, for example you might be able to press a button that doesn't actually show up in the artwork. The animations of the characters also looks good while they are moving around but there are some scenes that definitely could have benefited from more work and detail, usually the scenes that should have been more horrific. The end result is an adventure game that is nowhere near as good as the better ones in the genre and a horror game that isn't as good with horror or atmosphere as other horror games, it does look good for its time though.
