A very unique, entertaining multiplayer FPS

Evolve has a pretty unique mechanic that takes four players and puts them in the roll of hunters, tracking and killing a fifth player who plays as a monster. Currently there are four classes of hunters: Assault which is your damage class, Trapper which is responsible for finding and trapping the monster, Support which supports the team with buffs and debuffs, and Medic which keeps the team alive. Each hunter class has three different hunters you can choose from, each with unique abilities, for a total of 12 different hunters. You always have to have one hunter of each class on your team. As for the monsters, there are currently three of them and they each play VERY differently which is nice. Each monster has four abilities that you put points into at the start of the match and then again as you level up, which further customizes how each monster is played. The game also has several game modes, but for the sake of brevity I'll only talk about the hunt game mode since that's the most well-balanced and the largest draw to this game. As the hunters, you will be tracking the monster through the wilderness. You can do this in a number of ways: following the monster tracks, following a tracking hound, following monster kills, or if depending on the support class, by deploying a fast moving drone to mark the monster's position. One tracker also has the ability to shoot tracking darts that can either be shot into the monster or into the planet wildlife in anticipation of the monster eating it. The wilderness itself also poses hazards for the hunters since very few things sit by harmlessly and let you track the monster. As the monster, you start by trying to avoid the hunters while simultaneously killing and eating the wildlife. As you eat wildlife, you gain shields as well as an equivalent of experience that you use to level up or "evolve." As stated before, evolving allows you to put experience points into your abilities, strengthening them, as well as giving you a larger hit point pool. It should also be mentioned that monster have both shields and health. Shields regenerate, health does not. So even if you evolve, whatever damage you've taken stays with you, even though your health pool increases. At level three, the monster is a wrecking ball that will be very difficult for the hunters to deal with, especially if they haven't already put a bunch of damage into the monster. At level one, he's somewhat formidable, but the hunters have a distinct advantage and only a very talented monster who is good at using wildlife to his advantage will stand a chance against a full team. Level two of the monster is balanced to be a fairly even matchup, if not still slightly favouring the hunters. Replayability is the big question mark for this game. Personally, I see a lot here to enjoy. 12 hunters plus 3 monsters, all which play very differently gives me plenty of replayability. I still feel like I have a lot to learn with every class and enjoy almost every game that I play. It also has some of the craziest, highest intensity gameplay I've ever experienced and always look forward to having a talented team vs a talented monster, regardless of which side I'm on (even though I'm not all that talented).

Got what I payed for

I found out about this game from watching people play the Alpha, played the Beta, and decided I wanted to buy it. I bought the Monster Race Edition and recieved exactly what I expected, a fun game that I consider worth what I payed for it. Unfortunately I have to mark it down to 80 for a couple of reasons. One, there was no previous warning of the skin shop. I have no problem with it being there, and don't demand that it was released for free because that's not my business, however I would have liked to know it was going to be a thing beforehand. Two, region lock. Since I live in New Zealand, I'm locked into the oceanic servers, which has a woefully small player base. While I understand that the decision was made to reduce lag, I would have liked the option to handicap myself in order to play with more people. Overall, good game to pick up on sale if you think you'll enjoy it. Just ignore the reviews and steam discussions and watch someone actually playing it before making your decision.

I enjoy this game, it is one of the few games where you can personally feel like a final boss that's hard to beat. But at the same time all of the dlc that they charge for on the opening day should have come with it. On top of that the load times are nearly unbearable.
