A great but far from flawless game with a lot of content

Fallout 4 is a huge improvement from Fallout 3. Every major part is better in my opinion, especially the shooting, which now is pretty competent. The graphics are pretty good, and at times aesthetically really beautiful. Walking around in the Commonwealth with terrible music from the 50’s can be very atmospheric. There are a lot of quests with pretty intriguing plots, and the main story is pretty good too. But to me things started to get a bit dull after 60 hours or so. The shooting is a huge improvement, but still a bit monotonous if you don't use the VATS. Whether you're going to kill an enemy or how easy it's going to be is determined just as much by your equipment and level as by your skill, which sometimes can result in very boring experiences. For example, sometimes I just instantly kill everyone, but meeting a really high-leveled enemy is even worse. I just end up in terrible battles where I hide behind something, peak out, shoot, hide, and repeat that a hundred times. Overall the weapons feel very stiff, and there’s not a huge amount of impact with the conventional guns. But the worst thing is without question the dialogue wheel. The options are so terribly described that you really have to quick save each time before you choose anything. The text you choose describes what your character will say in a few words, you make an assumption about what he/she is going to say based on that, and it may be the completely opposite of what your character actually says. The worst choice appears really often and is "Sarcasm". That doesn't describe anything. For example (this isn't in the game), but if some happy mother would approach you with her child and ask if it looked cute (a really dumb scenario, but I can’t come up with anything better), there could be a lot of completely different things to say which all used sarcasm. For example "Yeah, that's a fucking cute baby. I'm sure it would look even better if you put it in a mixer and started it [the mixer, that is]." or just "Yeah. Totally." Those two sentences are quite different in tone, and would result in very different reactions from the mother. I really can't understand how the designers reasoned when they made that dialogue wheel. Enough ranting about the dialogue – which is pretty good if you ignore the method you choose what you’re going to say. Let’s move on to something positive, which is the all the content. As I said, the side quests are intriguing and often really fun. There are a lot of locations to explore, and the world is littered by stuff. There is no specific part of this game which is fantastic in any way, but the overall quality of everything is really great.

As Expected

I had the feeling I would get a game that felt just like the previous Fallout games and I got just that when I bought this game. The Graphics are definitely a step forward from the previous game but nothing special, enough to satisfy. The user interface, menu, etc. are a bit lacking for PC as it feels like a lazy port. Dialog/Choices feel narrowed down as 2/4 choices give the same outcome and your choices of words are very vague making that part of the game feel rushed. The fps part of the game is quite nice and a step above the previous game and the overall "Fallout" feel of the game is still there with a passion. Overall the game is a nice edition to the franchise but lacks the depth of choice compared to the others.

Old engine, fun game

wolfydude12 | Dec. 13, 2015 | See all wolfydude12's reviews »

The engine that fallout has been using is showing its age. It can only manage so so much, and while creators continue to make games look better each year, it subtracts from other parts of the game. This time they've taken much of the RPG aspects of the previous games. Conversations options are all the same and they don't really have much meaning. Gun battles are better than previous games. The world is alive and amazing, and the quests are fun. If you dont mind the RPG elements taken away, then get this game cause you wont regret it! If you want those RPG elements, it may be modded into the game later!

Must Play of 2015

dacimvrl | Dec. 9, 2015 | See all dacimvrl's reviews »

This is definitely a must play game of 2015. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic, open world environment. Graphics and audio are great, but not amazing. The signature Bethesda open world style of RPG is nothing short of stellar, however. Gameplay is focused around the use of your V.A.T.S for guns, as well melee weapons. V.A.T.S pauses the game so to speak, and allows you to target certain areas on the enemies body. You have a limited amount of action points to use in this mode, so once you aim, you come out of the aiming mode and the character carries out the orders you set. You can then either wait until your action points have been replenished or use free range shooting mode. As you wander around the desert, you will find plenty of items, weapons, food, drink, books and many more items that will be of use to you in someway or another. Obviously you cannot loot every single thing you find, alas we have a weight limit for how much you can carry on you at any given time. This can sometimes lead to difficult choices to make when it comes to looting heavy weapons or armor. As you progress through the game and get a higher reputation, you unlock safe houses, where you can store your items in fridges, cupboards and desks for safe keeping while you are out traveling. One thing I was surprised about in Fallout is that there is surprisingly not as much shooting and actual fighting as I had initially imagined. I created my character to be more based around being able to talk his way out of situations, and this cut down the amount of fighting I had to do by quite a bit I think. It was a nice surprise to see this big game take this approach as I have not come across many that have; like wise, you can go guns blazing at all times if you want; although I would hate to see how your story ends out.

Fun Game

Cpt_Speedy_Dash | Dec. 8, 2015 | See all Cpt_Speedy_Dash's reviews »

Fallout 4 is a pretty fun game. First I want to say that Fallout 4 is very little like Fallout 3 with most of the way the game runs changed. I will say not all of the changes are good one but all together it does make a good game. If you want it to be more like Fallout 3 then your best hope is getting it on PC with a greater selection of mods but this game is good in it's own way so try it first. As I said modding might not be fully supported as of yet but it isn't to difficult to install mods currently. It is a large game with much to explore and achieve with the promise of mods to come to add even more. This game is a very good game and I feel that it was worth the 60 dollars spent.
