Chrono WARS

While playing Chrono Rage, it is clearly evident that its a Geometry Wars inspired game. The controls are basically same with the use of both analog sticks . Art style is nearly identically. Game mechanics are largely same but differs slightly as Chrono Rage lets you manipulate time by slowing it, which results in higher maneuverability and instead of confining you in a limited space with limited lives, Chrono Rage lets you play the game with time trial challenges. If you run out of time you lose the challenge. The good thing however game is truly enjoyable and is really fun in short bursts. It should be noted that controller is a must . Controls with keyboard and mouse are terrible to say the least. A good indie game with a fair price and loads of fun.

twin-stick shooter with a twist

ArtyArt | June 27, 2011 | See all ArtyArt's reviews »

Chrono Rage is an interesting little twin-stick shooter à la Geometry Wars. 20 levels, 14 enemies to vanquish, interesting graphical style, not bad. What sets it apart from the rest of the genre is an interesting mechanic: instead of detonating bombs with an alternate fire button, you'll be slowing time to a crawl, giving you ample opportunity to maneuver out of critical situations.

Strategical use of this mechanic is needed, since you are racing against the clock to complete levels. Instead of giving you a set number of lives, you lose when the clock runs out, and every death sets you back 30 seconds. It's a fun little thing that gets rather tricky in the later levels.

My only complaint is the lack of variety - you'll be doing the exact same thing for 20 stages, and then the game is basically over. Sure, it gets more challenging, but there's never the feeling that your progress is somehow rewarded. Still, with 21 achievements there are a lot of things to do after the credits roll, but I doubt that most people will bother with it. Fans of the genre should definitely have a look, all others should at least wait until there's a discount.

Worth A Review

GMGReviewer | April 7, 2011 | See all GMGReviewer's reviews »

Chrono Rage is one of the only game worth reviewing if you like games like Geometry Wars. Better yet, it's better than Geometry Wars because the controls with Geometry Wars are terrible (with keyboard/mouse) and it's also outdated.

The graphics aren't as flashy, it's your typical arcade time-based game with good music, there's also power-ups and multiple enemies. It would be nice if the background change though, but other similar games doesn't change either.

It's the best geometry-wars-type clone i've played (beside Swarm Arena). The prices are just to high for arcade games like this.
