Avernum is an epic fantasy role-playing adventurer set in an enormous, subterranean nation. Avernum is a land underground, a subterranean nation full of rogues, misfits, and brigands, struggling for survival and wealth in the monster-infested darkness.
You have been banished to the underworld, never to see the light of day again.
The surface is ruled by the cruel Emperor Hawthorne, master of the Empire. All of the known lands are subject to his brutal command. Everyone who speaks out, misbehaves or doesn’t fit in is cast into the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, far below the surface. There, you are expected to die, a victim of starvation, horrible monsters, or simple despair.
But not all of the Avernites have surrendered. With magic and steel, they are forging a new nation deep underground. You can join them and fight for safety. Or freedom. Or, if you dare, revenge on the surface-worlders who tried to destroy you. Join your new countrymen, explore a huge game world, hunt for hundreds of magical artifacts, choose from hundreds of quests, and become the hero of the underworld!
Epic fantasy adventure in an enormous underworld.
Huge outdoors, eighty towns and dungeons, and hundreds of quests.
Three separate game-winning quests. Seek safety, escape or revenge. Complete just one or all three!

Hundreds of side quests and magical artifacts to discover.
Rich game system with over 50 spells and battle disciplines and a multitude of beneficial character traits to choose from.

Avernum is a updated version of Exile:Escape from the Pit. A fantastic story driven RPG about outsiders in a strange land. You can customize you team to how you play with hours of good times. The downside is the inability to shift the view angle, which makes using the keyboard commands a little difficult. There is a good sized demo available from the spiderweb website. If you've been a fan of these types or have played any of the others in the series, you won't regret this.

This is a great remake of a classic game that everyone should play. I was soo happy when I saw this on sale. A great game that I thought I would never see on on a digital platform because it was just too good. Although you can't play as the nephilim or slithzerikai like in prevous versions of the game, which is a bit sad as those races were really fun to play and beats playing as a human any day. Still a good remake of a classic game though, highly recommend.
A proper gamePowerGreen | May 24, 2013 | See all PowerGreen's reviews »
This is a proper game, with none of the namby-pamby nannying that a lot of "modern" games force on you. You can actually make your own characters! This is one of the games where you can actually look past the graphics, because underneath is some rich gameplay and a fantasy storyline. Take a game like this one and spruce the graphics up a bit (adding things like zoom and more animations), and you'll have a 100 scoring title.

Avernum: Escape From the Pit is an RPG-style-traditional occidental, developed by Spiderweb Software. In the wake of the classics of good vintage, the player must control their own party of characters through the winding tunnels of Avernum, an underworld, or rather a veritable prison built under the earth's crust, where they are confined to the political enemies of the tyrant emperor Hawthorne. Overall this Avernum: Escape from the Pit proves to be a good old-fashioned RPG: excellent setting and exploratory component, excellent longevity, and narration over the top. If you are fans of this genre will not have problems to like it. For everyone else who would like to give it a chanche, remember that the price is a good buy, especially if you can look beyond the interface problems and pathfinding.

Back in the 1990's Spiderweb Software created a little known PC RPG gem called Exile: Escape from the Pit. Several great sequels followed in the coming years before being recreated with a new graphics engine but the same solid gameplay, this game was known as Avernum.
What we have before us is a second re-imagining of the original game which is reflected in the title of the game. The gameplay is very good, the story original and interesting with multiple endings, the graphics have been improved again, not on level with any big budget title you would see today but a great effort for a tiny studio.
It is an excellent game and you will get your money's worth for certain, there is a lot of content to explore and you will find yourself wanting to play the sequels of the original games to see what happens next
