SHEEEPPPAAARRRRDD!!!!! In this second installment to the Mass Effect series, you return as Commander Shepard, the icon to combat the Reapers, an alien race that spells doom for all life in the galaxy. Many improvements have been made from the first game, which is one of the best features of the game. The combat system has been improved, armor customization has been upgraded, and the Normandy is looking greeaaaat. The visuals are appealing, and the soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in gaming. Period. Now let's get to the story. This feature is the BEST part of the game. Every character you feel for, and the plot line is just generally an awesome one. Every choice matters, and will effect the outcome of your game. Simply put, Mass Effect 2 is one of my all time favorite games, Heck, it's not a game. It's an experience.
An otherwise outstanding sequel with some setbacks.heerox328 | Dec. 7, 2014 | See all heerox328's reviews »
Mass Effect 2 truly was a reinvention of the Mass Effect brand. I know that sounds strange, but that's exactly what BioWare did when building the sequel to the critically-acclaimed and well-received new franchise. Mass Effect 2 continues the story of Commander Shepard and his crew on the Normandy. I'll spare you the details, but it's darker, more intimate, and is a story far more about relationships than the main plot, such as the previous game. If you are just interested in the story and are proficient with shooters, you'll absolutely love the game. If you are a bigger fan of RPGs and enjoyed the exploration of ME1, sadly ME2 stripped all those aspects away in favor of more fun gameplay and focus. Besides being more of a simple shooter-on-rails than its predecessor, my only criticism is that ME2 by far has the worst planet scanning/probe deploying mini-game in the history of the franchise. You will find 80% of your time is participating in this tedious event if you are a completionist like me and want to make sure you have enough resources to upgrade the Normandy and her crew. That one minor misstep aside, this is an incredible game. It's the Empire Strikes Back to A New Hope. An absolutely fantastic game. Lost a lot of RPG elements and depth of the first, but it improves in almost every way in other facets. I'd recommend purchasing ME1 before you pick this game up, however. The Genesis is a substitute, but you won't appreciate what is happening, especially at the beginning of the game. Play in chronological order and import your characters. You will not regret it.

Mass Effect 2 is a refinement of every aspect from the original. While Mass Effect was a great game, Mass Effect 2 compounds on that greatness, becoming one of Bioware's best games. The main focus of Mass Effect 2 are the choices you make and the story, and both are done exceptionally well. Forming your crew and roaming space gives you an amazing sense of freedom to do whatever you want. The third-person shooting is great, allowing you to use special abilities as well as conventional weapons to get the job done. If you're a fan of great stories in video games, Mass Effect 2 is one of the best you can buy.
