Coop Fest

The reason I bought MW2 is for the coop SpecOps mode, and I wasn't disappointed. SpecOps is wonderful for someone like me, who typically doesn't play competitive multiplayer, and who has maybe a half hour at a time, three or four times a week, to devote to games. Grab a friend, and SpecOps offers tons of variety in bite-sized chunks, with the incentive to keep playing to beat the most difficult three-star level in each challenge. One caveat: both you and your friend must have quite fast internet, or SpecOps becomes a lag-fest. All the coordination of physics and AI means that it runs significantly worse than competitive multiplayer on the same network. Other than SpecOps, the campaign is fun but forgettable, and the competitive multiplayer is layered and fast (but very frustrating for someone like me, who is not competitive enough). A good buy.

Save yourself the trouble

What to say about MW2? Well it's old. The graphics are dated, but not as dated as the newer release. (which should say something) The singleplayer is what you expect from CoD. An over the top railroaded FPS with a weak story. Still it is amusing to play through, you can probably finish it in 6 hours on hard mode. But the real selling point is of course the multiplayer. Which sucks big time on the PC. No more dedicated servers, no more server browser and apparently they forgot the anti-cheat as well. All those promisses that we would have a lag and cheat free multiplayer experience? Well it's all a lie. The MP has been taken over by cheaters. And I mean the blatant ones who even advertise the cheat they are using. It doesn't help that it's a peer-to-peer system either. More often then not you'll get paired up with someone who is on a 2400 baud dial-up connection. He get's 0 ping and you, well you'll be watching the respawn screen a lot. Give this one a miss.

Fun but broken

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is at surface level just another game in the Call of Duty series. It has the fast-paced gunplay that fans have come to know and love, it has the wide variety of weapons, it has many different maps for players to wage war upon. This game however suffers from one main issue, this issue being the lack of balance in it. Many guns are overpowered and many perks are exploited negatively. This really puts a bad mark on the otherwise very fun experience.

Same old multiplayer-focused shooter

The first Call of Duty came out in 2003 and ever since there has been a CoD game every year. This title marked the first time where a CoD game was actually a sequel to one before it (CoD 4: Modern Warfare). And this is the last Modern Warfare title I bothered playing. The graphics already started to look aged here, and it seems as though IW has been using the same engine for years. Thankfully there is a decent score with some work put in by Hans Zimmer that is worth a listen. If you’re a fan of Michael Bay films, you’ll like this. This is the Michael Bay of games. Linear as it gets, plenty of explosions and effects, with nothing really that different to offer besides a change in scenery and only a few new game modes to extend the painfully short lifespan of the singleplayer campaign. Multiplayer fanatics will eat it up though, although having said that, it is a step down from the prequel, with no dedicated servers.

Modern Warfare 2 will be very familiar for those who played the original Modern Warfare...and that's because the game hasn't moved on much, and, in fact, gotten worse... The first person story game is okay, I'll play it once...but the on-line multi-player experience is terrible. Gone are the dedicated servers, the quick game joins, the glorious 40 player games, the occasional cheat (because the server admin kicked him and his winging mate... All replaced with peer to peer hosting (read: laggy), automatic (read: poor) player matching, the maximum 18 player (9v9) games, and the occasional honest player, who, like you, has stumbled into a bot v. bot battle of the cheat... I am now praying to the God of Honest Players that a dedicated server will be released, along with stronger anti-cheat measures, so that this emptiness I feel will go away.... But they have my money now...I don't think I'll ever feel as if it wasn't conned out of my pocket...
