Half game, half guitar trainer

Rocksmith 2014 is often advertised as the easiest way to learn how to play the guitar, and that may very well be true. I played guitar for about five years a decade ago, and haven't played much since. I was interested in Rocksmith because I wanted to get back into playing guitar, but didn't have the drive to do it alone and had no one to play with. And so I picked up Rocksmith along with a few DLC songs that I had always wanted to learn and went to work. Also for those who own the original Rocksmith, DLC from that game transfers directly over to 2014, although songs in the original catalog do not without an additional purchase. I wasn't too happy with that, but it is what it is.

One of the best aspects of Rocksmith is the progressive nature of the guitar training. You are slowly introduced to new notes in songs as you try to learn it. As you complete sections with fewer and fewer mistakes, you are given more and more notes, always chasing that 100% mark. Additionally, if you start getting 100% on sections, the game will start to fade out the notes so that you have to play from memory. It's an interesting feature that you have the option of turning off or leaving on. You also have the ability to stop on particular riffs if they are giving you trouble and hammer them out over and over until you get them down.

Also for the experience guitarists, you can go into options and just crank the difficulty to max right away to see how you fare on playing the full song from scratch. A bit difficult for me, but one of my friends appreciated that he didn't have to start from the very beginning every time.

Some of the indicators that you are presented with are not always completely self-explanatory and finding out what exactly things mean can sometimes be a little difficult, but once you know what the game is telling you to do, it's back to practicing.

For people who actually want to learn how to play guitar or wanted a more realistic experience than Guitar Hero, Rocksmith 2014 may be exactly what you are looking for.

Better than the first one

Rocksmith 2014 is a game in which the player connects his guitar into the game you learn songs or new techniques by playing together with the song in the game. The game features a lot of different songs of different genres, from classical music to heavy metal. This new game is easier to play along, it has more techniques lessons and also a new mode where you can make your own virtual band and play something like a solo and they'll keep up with you. The game overall is awesome and I recommend this to all guitar players, from beginners to professionals, because this will surely help you improve your abilities on the instrument. Great work from Ubisoft!

A Truly Contemporary Guitar Hero

Qwertyfour | Oct. 26, 2013 | See all Qwertyfour's reviews »

While the Guitar Hero games were fun and all, they didn't teach you how to play a guitar. Rocksmith 2014 does. In this edition, it has an amazing selection of songs and mini games that never go stale. The UI is updated to actually make sense, unlike previous iterations and the Guitar Hero games so it's actually quite nice to look at while you learn how to play the guitar. In addition, there's no progression whatsoever. While some might think that as a bad thing, I think that it's for the better. You can move at your own pace with learning the guitar. Also, the tutorial videos are really helpful. Like, not convoluted. If you want to learn how to play the guitar, then definitely pick this game up. You'll need an electric guitar to play this, though.
