Submarine sims (or even just combat sims in general) may have become a niche market recently, but Ubisoft has continued to turn out the Silent Hunter series this past decade.
Silent Hunter 4 goes in a different direction than your typical WWII subsim, as it instead focuses on the American side of the war, with a new setting in the Pacific Ocean. The change in side and theater provides a welcome change of pace for those that have been playing these games since the days of Silent Service, Aces of the Deep, or just the original Silent Hunter.
Graphically the game is very nice, with clean lines and quality models. The game uses a filter to give the game a sort of "retro moving painting" look, for lack of better words, but it does work well. Sound is suitably fitting, with reasonable voice acting and the typical sounds of war.
Gameplay wise, the vanilla stock game is challenging and well thought out. Training missions, single missions, and a campaign spanning the war from the U.S. West Coast all the way to Australia, Japan and back are faithfully recreated. A quality assortment of merchant vessels, their escorting destroyers, and larger surface warships are included.
Even so, the game has a fairly steep learning curve, and is really meant for those with experience or an outward interest in the genre. I would recommend visiting the Subsim website/forum to familiarize yourself with the different games, and look at the great assortment of mods that possibly make SH4 the best modern subsim on the market.
