Rome Gold is a good game. No game breaking bugs, but lacking polish of later Paradox grand strategy games. Roman Era is my favorite time, and I'm glad I can play those years through this game. However, you'll have more fun and take advantage of Paradox's continuing improvements by playing later games such as EU3, or Crusader Kings 2.
Overall, if you are in love with late BC early AD time period in Europe, you can't go wrong with this game.

Compared to the original and the third Europa Universalis, EU Rome can feel small and lacking in the number of factions. It's still fun, but it's a significantly smaller feel.
