Hard but alot of fun

This isn't your ordinary strategy game and by all means not for those just entering the world of strategy games. It has a very difficult learning curve due to the large amount of management needed for domestic to play the game successfully especially in multiplayer. However the game can provide hours of hardcore entertainment once you do start understanding how to play the game well. This is quite possibly one of the best World War II simulators to date and is worth giving a try.

HOI3 - Review

mevidek | Aug. 18, 2011 | See all mevidek's reviews »

Hearts of Iron 3 is the third game in the long-running franchise that remains to date, to be one of the best grand strategy series to date. Hearts of Iron may not be one for all gamers as it requires time, patience, and is one of the most detailed/complex games ever.

Hearts of Iron 3 doesn't exactly look good. In fact it looks quite bad, but that doesn't really matter. Actually it doesn't matter at all, when you think about it. The game makes up for it in depth, gameplay, options, and story. You can play as almost every single country between 1933/6-45, although certain countries such as Bolivia are significantly more difficult than others such as Nazi Germany, or Communist Russia. As the game tells you in the tutorial, HOI3 does not have any objectives, or doesn't set targets. It is up to you to choose how to play out history, and do what you want. This simple premise works greatly, and is not as easy to do as one would think. HOI3 isn't a game for all. It's always down to the gamer. If you enjoy ridiculously hard games, and don't care about graphics then you should get this, if not then don't. Oh, and make sure you have a LOT of time on your hands!

Not for mainstream

hotmando1 | July 1, 2011 | See all hotmando1's reviews »

This game isn't mainstream and for obvious reasons. The game has a HUGE learning curve and one that requires patience. For those looking for an easy win in a game such as this, do not get it. I didn't have the patience for the learning curve and the lack of any on-screen action turned me away. The map looks accurate so to say, a shame it isn't 3d. Not much eye-candy to look at. To be what you want and what you do is nice and all, but it really lacks structure. It requires a ton of attention, something I'm unable to give and i'm sure a lot of other people wouldn't give either. Like I said, this game isn't mainstream. Some bugs here and there like random crashes at time. I'd get this game for a price other than twenty dollars. Maybe five. Unless your a fan of this genre of course.

Can it be really harder?

fearon | April 11, 2011 | See all fearon's reviews »

Yes. HoI3 is greater, more complex and harder than absolutely amazing second part of series. It brings tons of new opportunites to survive in second World War. But don't be so scared. There is new system, that will help new players with this complicated world of great politics. Now you can give to AI control of all major parts of game and focus on the battles. But is HoI3 better than second one? In my opinion no - but its still great game.

Biggest World War II Simulation so far

keeveek | April 11, 2011 | See all keeveek's reviews »

This is no strategy for newbies. Not for people who like easy games, too. Firstly - it's bigger, more complex than HOI2, so even if you're familiar with other games from the franchise youll have to learn new features (changed technology tree, better AI etc). But, if you have an opportunity buy it with expansion - it develops even further this piece of art. Graphics are questionable - some would enjoy new 3d-style map, others would say that older was better. I think the map looks good. Units aren't that pretty, but you may want to use counters - like on real strategic table in headquaters :D You may choose every country present in the world from 1933 to cold war but i would recommend to play a country that played a mayor role in the WW2 - unless you want to get bored. This game is a gem to people who love demanding games. Not for everyone.
