Building upon the success of Dawn of War, Winter Assault brings with it the vast and mighty Imperial Guard. It also brings 2 brand new campaigns utilizing 4 of the 5 armies (sorry Space Marines, but you got your own in the first DoW). The new campaigns is an added bonus to those looking to spend hours on single player.
But onto the major point of this expansion - the Imperial Guard. They play radically different than the other 4 armies. As opposed to brute force or speed, the Imperial Guard excels at defense and their armoured units are second to none. Individually (their squad sizes are huge) they are incredibly weak, but when your reserves easily number in the quadrillions, your best bet would be to fill the map with men and crash your opponent's computer (kidding). But nonetheless if you enjoy falling back, tanks, or just plain huge amount of infantry, the Imperial Guard is for you.

This expansion pack adds the Imperial Guard race/faction, who are the closest to modern military today in that they are basically normal people using futuristic technology. This race adds a lot to game as they have their own unique play style, so if you enjoy a bit of added variety then it is worth picking up. The only small downside is that there is not really as much added as I would hope for an expansion pack, this is certainly the weakest of the 3 expansions, however it is still a good game with another unique race and campaign, so its worth picking up if you're a fan of warhammer or the RTS genre.

Winter Assault was somewhat of a lighter expansion than later entrees, but the Imperial Guard are a great addition, though the campaign does feel a bit on the short side compared to the rest of the series. And the Imperial Guard is the only added race, where the follow ups each offer two. Still, if you enjoyed Dawn of War I really feel it's worth it to get all four.
On the plus side, two campaigns are offered instead of just one, adding a slight amount of replay-value -though many of the missions are the game- and four different endings. I didn't feel it did as well of a job helping the player get a feel for the races, but it's a good entry nonetheless.
Basically, Winter Assault is more of everything you liked about Dawn of War, but perhaps not much more.
