Honkai: Nexus Anima<\/a>.<\/p>\nA Colourful World With a Darker Side<\/h2>\n
Honkai: Nexus Anima is a little bit of a lot of things. It combines HoYoverse\u2019s familiar taste for dark, twisted storytelling with what might be the company\u2019s most colourful world yet. Almost every corner bursts with detail, helped by the fact that this universe isn\u2019t populated by people alone. It is also home to plenty of adorable monsters.<\/p>\n
These creatures, known as Anima, have designs that wouldn\u2019t look out of place in Pok\u00e9mon. Instead of being divided into conventional elemental categories, however, they have more abstract, mood-driven attributes based on concepts such as Satiation and Dreams. It gives the game\u2019s creatures a distinct identity, even if its inspirations are easy to spot.<\/p>\n
Simple Battles, Layered Team-Building<\/h2>\n
You\u2019ll use your Anima in auto-battles, with success largely depending on choosing creatures that work well together and placing them in effective positions. The characters you have access to provide special abilities, while fielding particular combinations of Anima can grant additional bonuses.<\/p>\n
The battles themselves aren\u2019t especially complicated, but there appears to be plenty of depth in building an effective team. You\u2019ll want to spend time exploring and catching creatures, both to expand your tactical options and to make your existing Anima stronger.<\/p>\n
That progression loop could prove compelling. There is something undeniably satisfying about watching the numbers rise, particularly when each improvement gives you another reason to experiment with your line-up.<\/p>\n
How Does the Gacha System Work?<\/h2>\n
The gacha system is split between pulling for characters, who provide new abilities, and pulling for Anima to obtain higher-rarity versions or upgrade those already in your collection. Anima can also be caught in the wild, which makes the monetisation side of the game a little unusual.<\/p>\n
The full release will presumably encourage players to pull for the strongest creatures, but being able to find lower-rarity Anima and improve them through play is promising. It may give players the freedom to make their favourites viable by investing time rather than money.<\/p>\n
Of course, this is still a gacha game, so monetisation will inevitably be part of the experience. Even if Honkai: Nexus Anima proves relatively welcoming to free-to-play players, it will still be designed to encourage spending.<\/p>\n
Can Auto-Battling Hold Your Attention?<\/h2>\n
I enjoy auto-battlers, but their hands-off nature can sometimes make them less engaging over time. Honkai: Nexus Anima\u2019s progression systems should help keep players invested, although much will depend on the variety of challenges available beyond the main campaign.<\/p>\n
HoYoverse has become increasingly good at creating entertaining side modes in its recent games, so there is every reason to expect more than a straightforward journey through the story. Whether those additional activities can keep the team-building interesting in the long term remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
A Familiar Start to a Potentially Dark Story<\/h2>\n
While I like most of what I\u2019ve seen so far, the story feels a little flimsy. Once again, we play as a protagonist with no memory, a device that is starting to feel like a crutch in games of this kind. It makes delivering exposition easier, but there is something frustrating about beginning another adventure as a character who knows almost nothing about themselves or the world around them.<\/p>\n
The villains are more encouraging. They bring a slightly more sinister edge to the otherwise colourful setting, and although the narrative currently feels a little crowded, there is real potential for this to become one of HoYoverse\u2019s darkest stories yet. Given the territory explored by games such as Genshin Impact, that is no small claim.<\/p>\n
An Exciting Prospect With Some Big Questions<\/h2>\n
I\u2019m excited to see how Honkai: Nexus Anima develops ahead of its eventual release. The characters are as compelling as we\u2019ve come to expect from HoYoverse, and even if the story currently feels cluttered, the studio has repeatedly shown that it can deliver engaging narratives.<\/p>\n
My biggest concern is how the gacha system will be balanced. A creature-collecting game creates plenty of opportunities to encourage spending, and while everyone is free to use their disposable income however they choose, the crucial question is how enjoyable the game will be without paying.<\/p>\n
That is almost impossible to judge during a beta. However, the ability to catch Anima in the world offers some hope that this could become one of HoYoverse\u2019s more accommodating games for free-to-play players and low spenders.<\/p>\n
