The first episode starts directly after the events known from Half-Life 2. So who did not play the core version should do that first before tackling this expansion. One major change, which you can tell pretty easily is the use of a little newer version of the Source engine. This obviously translates into a slightly nicer graphic design. Ep1 continues the good tradition of Half-Life 2 and it is also a very decent game only much shorter. Must have for everyone who liked the core game.
Half life 2 is awesome, so getting more of it is always appreciated. The new levels are built up masterfully, and walking in the even more ruined city 17 is a genuinely creepy experience. Alyx Vence is a Great sidekick, you will never get bored of her banter, and she is useful ina fight too, especially once you run out of ammo. there aren't many new things here. No new weapons, and only 2 newish enemies. The zombine are fun though :) The game is short, but fun. 5 hours, and you1re done with it. Itst a great experience, and very replayable, so it is highly recommended!
It seems, every HL game needs at least one expansion that is crap, compared to the others. Then again, it would be unfair, to call this game the Blue Shift of HL2. For one, the story is still pretty strong here, and you can get a good 5 hours of gameplay out of this, which is really rather good, it just feels short...really really short. At least, you're in good company. Alyx almost never leaves your side here, and she is an awesome character. She is obviously scripted, yet you almost feel like there's a real person beside you. There are times, when i find myself answering to her chatter. Yes, it is that well written. Oh, and don't forget, the suppression field is down, so it's time to get busy! ;)
The first Game I ever played. I remember being 10 and booting this puppy on the family Mac. I remember thinking about nothing but the game for the next year and a half. I found my best friend through the game. I still play it today, and every time I play it I feel like a kid again. I just love the universe in which it takes place.
Half-Life 2: Episode 1 offers everything we saw in the original game, but improving weaknesses and adding new and interesting elements. A better cautious and bearable argument reveals certain pending doubts and engages the player actively. Buy recommended for lovers of shooters, and also does not require you to have Half-Life 2, as it works independently.
