Renowned Explorers: International Society is a very interesting game revolving around randomized exploration, turn-based combat and mild RPG elements. You can play it as a roguelite (which in my opinion is what the game was designed for) or you can play a more forgiving mode, in which you get to retry an encounter if the health of all your characters drops to 0 (on the contrary, if this happens in the former mode, your campaign will be over and you'll have to start from scratch). Overall, the ideas behind this game and the way all the elements are combined make REIS feel like a very original game. Unfortunately, it suffers from a bit of repetitiveness (not unlike its predecessor, Reus), so it's best purchased if you plan to get the DLC (More to Explore) at the some point to extend its lifespan.
The name definitely doesn't indicate what you get with this game. Exploration does happen quite a bit, but it's closer to a management game. When you discover new lands, you can go in seeking knowledge, friendship, or domination and have many tactis you can implement for each. It's not on a 4X level of strategy, but it has enough depth to keep the pace fast and fun.
