Silent Hill: Homecoming is quite the misnomer, as it does not do anything to welcome anyone back to the game. In Silent Hill, you take the role of an honestly uninteresting character as you search the town of not-Silent Hill for your younger brother. If this sounds familiar, then odds are you have played the original Silent Hill before, as this is one of Silent Hill’s biggest problems: aside from what some of the monsters actually look like (some of which are creepy), there are few new ideas. The plot is the same previous Silent Hill games and the monsters weren’t designed to be physical representations of the town or the protagonist as they were in previous games; they’re just monsters for you to fight. No monster is a bigger sign of this than Pyramid Head, who has gone from one man’s desire to see himself punished for the crimes that he comes to grips with during the course of Silent Hill 2, to just something featured in the game to artificially boost interest and sales. The plot twists are tired and nowhere near as interesting as they were in previous Silent Hill games, back when the plot twists were originally used, and a combo system was added into the game that is just out of place. Silent Hill is the kind of game that you would expect to see from a fan of the Silent Hill games who wanted to make their own but has no idea how to. They manage to make a game that is kinda creepy, but nowhere near as good as the original, much like what happened to Resident Evil games.
Silent Hill - Homecoming brings a great new dynamic, now the feeling of fear and terror are more intense leaving the players tense at all time. The graphics have been taken to the extreme , with extremely beautiful surroundings and further increasing the feeling of terror. The game's graphics should be highlighted because they are really wonderful from the beginning. The controls respond very well with very few flaws , making the gameplay more wonderfull. Without a doubt I recommend the game primarily for people who like tight games and survival- horror. Unfortunately the game is not as good as the first but it is still one of the best in the series, with much terror and many scares.
Silent Hill Homecoming isn't a good game. It's best to get this fact out of the way from the beginning and start from there. While the game has an interesting enough story, a few pretty good moments, and seems solid on the surface, and ungodly amount of technical problems, bad combat and lackluster puzzles and enemies by the end doom this to the same hell that Silent Hill resides. Be prepared in your experience to have multiple moments of "hey, this isn't that bad" or even "this is kind of fun" only to wonder later after the 10th CTD why you even bother finishing this. It's common for the game to inexplicably crash before every level transition, so be prepared to take out a boss, only to be kicked off right after, forcing you to play the boss again. Crossing your fingers and willing the game past these areas is the only known fix. This game will randomly freeze for 10 seconds at a time. Sound will get off or stop altogether. Save points are woefully few and far between, and autosave points aren't remembered after crashes. As I heard a family member say, the technical bugs of this game are truly the scariest parts. Beyond that, the story is passable, controls are awful, the game could be completed with the first weapon (knife), enemies become uninspired halfway through and boring/easy by the end, and all in all, it's just not worth it. Play at your own risk.
I don't know why so many people are harping on about this being a bad game. It is not. Do not go into this game thinking it will be the best you've played and the experience is amplified by lowering down those critical walls. It;s interesting, strange, fun, a thrill, a good soundtrack, well written story, I could go on. The game is worth the $10 to pick it up and play.
I think for a game like this it is important to judge it by itself and not as a 'Silent Hill Sequel'...Many people complain that it has changed far too much, which I don't believe that is true....Combat has been taken into a little bit more of care...meaning you can take on your enemies a bit better rather than feeling a bit more helpless...To me the most 'Important' factor in Silent Hill is it's story....And yea...this game certainly has story...Silent Hill Homecoming is all about finding your little brother, during these events you meet people from your past and come to find out what really happened back in the protagonists younger days...I must say this game is full of unease, twists, and suspense...exactly what you should expect from Silent Hill
