A unique twist on the adventure genre, Double fine manages to bring yet another well crafted game to the table. Presented with a choice of 7 characters at the start, you get to pick 3 at one time and control them individually. Alternatively you can play in co-op as well, but singleplayer works just fine. Don't get fooled by it's appearance though, this is not a platformer nor does it want to be. It is an adventure game combined with a lot of puzzle solving, so if that's your cup of tea, then this is the game for you. It doesn't come without it's flaws though. Things such as framerate locked at 30 fps, the big amount of backtracking (you play 3 characters instead of one), and being forced to replay some parts of the game just to finish the entire story can be very annoying at times, but if you can get past these issues, then this is a great purchase. The game length is about 4 hours per 3 characters (and there are 7 in total)
Kind of underrated, The Cave is a great experience that goes all in for replayability. The world set by the developers is fascinating, and the charisma of the characters and specially the narrator will give you a lot of fun. If you leave all that behind, what's left is a good puzzle-platform game but nothing really special or far from what we've been playing all these years in lots of indie games. The moment you get into its universe, the moment you'll probably love it. If you don't mind backtracking a lot you'll find in The Cave what others didn't. It's pretty short, so, you won't lost a lot of time of your life if you give it a try, and it is totally worth it.
The Cave gives you a motley assortment of characters all with their own unique abilities, then lets you run amok in very creative, and oftentimes humorous situations. There's seven characters to choose from, each with their own individual backstory. From a knight, two a hillbilly, evil twins and a scientist, there's something here for everyone. If you're a fan of Monkey Island or any of Ron Gilbert -- and the quirky, witty humor present in every Double Fine game -- you owe it to yourself to try this game.
And when you thought that the platformer genre is going in one direction this game pops out. It is a very well made game by double fine, and one of the best platformers that year. First the art style and sound are amazing, like every game made from Double Fine. The gameplay feels really smooth and nice. But the best part is the multiple characters. Every character has a story of their own and their own unique abilities and puzzles to unlock . When you play every one of them you feel like you begin a new adventure, I might even calling starting a totally new game. This game really does things right.
I was unsure of what to expect from The Cave, going through it with no expectations I was pleasantly suprised by a dark comical adventure that comes with a healthy dose of replayability. The story drives the game forward, together with the platforming and puzzle mechanics this makes for a great experience with plenty of memorable moments. Short but sweet If you get the chance to play this gem, don't hesitate to give it a try. I had a blast and I'm sure you will too.
