This game is debatably the weakest of the modern LEGO games, but even at it's lowest point, it's hard not to recommend this game. If you've played one LEGO game you've essentially played them all. However, it's truly hard to hate this game - with it's colorful characters, fun plot and exciting action imported straight from the film, it's sure to be a hit with kids, or fans of LEGO games in general.
I actually played this game before I saw the movie, and I can honestly say the game is far better than the movie was. The game covers the entire movie, but it's just much more fun I guess since you're actually playing it instead of watching it. There's a bunch of small hubs to explore so there's no open world in this game. None of the hubs will take you long to explore though, and there's not as much to unlock as a result. Characters range from original creations to Batman and Gandalf, so there's someone in this game for everyone to enjoy. The boss fights are fun, the puzzles are simple, and the levels are a decent length. It plays like every other Lego game. Don't fix what's broken I guess. But don't add in anything new either for that matter because who wants something new to do? This game doesn't have as much combat as other Lego ones though so it's a little more on the boring side. There's also a couple of dance mini games where you hit onscreen prompts like in a QTE. I would recommend this game only to people who love the Lego games or enjoyed the movie. It's a great game, but the licensed Lego games like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Indiana Jones are much much better.
As a huge fan of the movie and Lego games in general, I got to say this entry into the Lego series by Traveller's Tales is one of the weaker ones. The game's campaign follows the movie closely and each level is based off a key scene from the movie, like Lego Lord of the Rings or Lego Star Wars. In those levels is a fun mix of puzzle solving and platforming using different characters with unique abilities. It's essentially what we've come to expect from all the Lego games up to this point. What makes this one different is that it's actually tying in with a new movie, not just based upon an old franchise. Fortunately, it's tying in with a movie about Legos, a perfect fit. But the syndrome of movie tie-in games rears it's ugly head into The Lego Movie Videogame. It feels more rushed than previous Lego games, like the designers are stretching out scenes in the movie to go on for a 20-30 minute level. It feels like they're padding the game out to be much longer than it should be, and that creates boredom. This reminds me of the Lego games on the Nintendo DS, where the levels are padded out with extremely repetitive puzzles and and button-mashy combat sequences. It's a shame too because I was really looking forward to this game. In terms of everything else, the music and graphics are fantastic and fit the style of the movie perfectly. This is one pretty looking game and is the first of the TT Lego games to be entirely made of Legos, so that's nice. Unfortunately, the core gameplay feels scaled back and TT just gave us the bare minimum, even the open world part of game is contained of small chunks instead of one big world. Really, the game is not bad, I would recommend it if you like the previous Lego games or really enjoyed the movie, it just isn't solid as previous Lego games.
First, let me say that this game is graphically pleasing, and is fun to play! It's an overall enjoyable experience, IF you enjoy LEGO games! If you disliked all past LEGO games, you are going to dislike this one! It's just that simple. Same sense of humor, same play mechanics, just new setting and story. Now about the story: The story, is taken right from the movie(Minus some of the best song and dance sequences). There's nothing really new, and if you have seen the movie, then you literally know everything that is going to happen in the game. That being said, if you HAVEN'T seen the movie, then this will spoil the movie for you. My favorite aspect is the walking/driving around bricksburg. It's almost like GTA: Lego land! Seriously, I think I have spent more time grabbing a LEGO ice cream truck, and driving over flower carts and trees, than I actually have playing the game.
Based on The Lego Movie, this game follow similarly to many of the other lego series games. With many unlockable characters, skills and skins, this game provides many hours of fun and is a must get for those who enjoy the previous lego series predecessors.
