Arkham Knight is the final game in the Arkham series and has Batman and his allies going up against Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight as well as a new militia faction that has taken over Gotham City after an evacuation. At different points the game allows you to play as five playable characters (Batman, Nightwing, Red Robin, Catwoman, and Arael), usually for a short time in the story mode or in the games challenge mode maps (eight if you buy three of the DLC packs or the season pass which adds in Batgirl, Harley Quinn, and Red Hood), giving you the most character options the series has had since having four in Arkham City. The new game further expands on combat options with triple counters, characters grabbing you from behind you you hitting them to break free, making use of all the character types the series has seen so far and new ones, countering at the right time while moving towards enemies now throws them, and there are now sections where you fight with an ally and switch between characters or do co-op takedowns. Fear takedowns, that can have you chaining three to five knock outs, look cool, and while they can be overpowered there are some new enemies that can detect you in different way or that can heal knocked out allies to make things a bit more difficult. The Batmobile is a new addition that unfortunately becomes more of an annoyance, fighting with it is just really easy and you are frequently forced to use it in puzzles or story areas which just slows the game down, some of the race activities for the car are well made though. You have some new movement options and upgrades that allow you to get around the city quickly, such as launching out of the Batmobile, being able to throw gadgets while gliding, or being able to launch yourself much further than before with your grapple hook. The Joker is played by Mark Hamill again and has some great moments, but the main antagonists aren't interesting and it is easy to guess who the Arkham Knight is. The Scarecrow actually ends up being really boring which is a shame after his great moments from some of the other titles. The Riddler's trophies have become more annoying to collect and he is doing odd things like setting up race tracks but you can do almost all of his activities just by progressing through the game without finding set amounts of his trophies. Other more major antagonists either are captured quickly in a short mission or are low tier villains that just aren't that interesting. The game's weird obsession with the Batmobile continues when it comes to boss fights with you fighting the Arkham Knight in three different vehicles and then once on foot where all you have to do is avoid his line of sight when he sits in place, Deathstroke even makes an appearance if you finish enough missions but even that fight is him in a tank that you will likely destroy just by firing your secondary weapons at it. There are no good on foot encounters with any of the named characters, even Two Face was easily taken down with a new Fear takedown the moment he appeared where in the previous games named characters would recover and continue fighting. Some more story based missions and more popular villains from previous games were added in different DLC packs. Henchmen dialogue seems more amusing this time around and it is nice to see some of the regular enemies actually run from you on the street. The game puts you in Gotham instead of just a small confined area or the asylum but it empties the city giving you a large and dull environment that feels like a wasted opportunity, it would have been nice to at least run into some people who stayed or that were unable to leave. There are a lot of side activities but most aren't that interesting, saving firefighters is just you beating up the people guarding them, destroying road blocks is just beating up the guards in a little blocked off section, following a serial killer is just finding and scanning hanging bodies, disarming bombs is just fighting waves of drones with the Batmobile. Many of the other activities will have you searching around the city for them which tends to get old fast. It's a shame that fear has never been made more of a mechanic in the predator sections, this would have been the entry to do it with the focus being around the Scarecrow. It's an enjoyable entry in the series with the usual good gameplay, even though not everything new that has been added is good, it doesn't do much to improve upon the stealth formula or city design, the original predator maps weren't made for all the characters in mind, it is held back by the Batmobile always needing to be included, and you are only able to travel around the city in single player as Batman this time around. I prefer Asylum and City for story and Asylum for it's world design but if you want another good Batman game or were a fan of the challenge maps and playing as different characters you should enjoy this.
