Chrono Rage never strays far from conventions, but it is always a joy to play. The lack of multiplayer and selectable difficulties is regrettable, but hardly detrimental in light of the numerous modes offered. In a market becoming crowded with shoddy knockoffs, Chrono Rage stands out as a polished trophy of the genre.
Chrono Rage is nothing new here but the artistic style and great game feel is something to be impressed by. It follows the traditional conventions of any old twin stick shooter where everything is out to kill you and it's your job to eliminate all that stands in your way. Graphically the game is solid with a modern 8-bit look with vibrant colours that pop out of the screen. The enemies are very reminiscent of old arcade games like Galaxian and Space invaders and offers that arcade vibe that we just don't see in game anymore. Controls are intuitive and solid with an option to use just the keyboard, or switch to a keyboard and mouse setup. Both control methods are fine and work as they should. The sound in this game is awesome with a wonderful soundtrack that adds to the experience. The overall sound effects are satisfying which adds to the game feel and to the overall excitement that this game offers. The only criticism I can find with this game is that sometimes levels are just too easy and can sometimes drag on just a bit, but there are different game modes to spice up the game play. Overall this game is a traditional twin stick shooter done right and is very fun to play. It's nice to see that indie developers take inspiration from old arcade games and note that great graphics and a complex story isn't needed to make a great game. I really like this game and I believe to be a must buy. 8/10
This is one of those games in that everything tries to kill you. No, that's never really explained, but take it to mean that everything aside from your tiny ship is hostile - and only overwhelming firepower has a chance of stopping it. This is akin to something you'd find in a smashed, trashed old arcade machine, and there's very much a reason for it - it's just plain fun. Graphically, it doesn't look all that good compared to similar games of today, but it looks nice and retro, which means it runs flawlessly on modern hardware. All your enemies are easily recognizable, as they contrast well with the subdued backgrounds - eye strain with this one isn't a worry. Control-wise, the developers of Chrono Rage got everything just right. Your ship controls just the way you'd expect it to, and when reaching for an unknown, but assumed key for a particular function, you'll never be wrong. The sounds are great, with a rocking soundtrack that ties in nicely with the action on screen. Awesome game, and a steal at this price.
While playing Chrono Rage, it is clearly evident that its a Geometry Wars inspired game. The controls are basically same with the use of both analog sticks . Art style is nearly identically. Game mechanics are largely same but differs slightly as Chrono Rage lets you manipulate time by slowing it, which results in higher maneuverability and instead of confining you in a limited space with limited lives, Chrono Rage lets you play the game with time trial challenges. If you run out of time you lose the challenge. The good thing however game is truly enjoyable and is really fun in short bursts. It should be noted that controller is a must . Controls with keyboard and mouse are terrible to say the least. A good indie game with a fair price and loads of fun.
Chrono Rage is an interesting little twin-stick shooter à la Geometry Wars. 20 levels, 14 enemies to vanquish, interesting graphical style, not bad. What sets it apart from the rest of the genre is an interesting mechanic: instead of detonating bombs with an alternate fire button, you'll be slowing time to a crawl, giving you ample opportunity to maneuver out of critical situations. Strategical use of this mechanic is needed, since you are racing against the clock to complete levels. Instead of giving you a set number of lives, you lose when the clock runs out, and every death sets you back 30 seconds. It's a fun little thing that gets rather tricky in the later levels. My only complaint is the lack of variety - you'll be doing the exact same thing for 20 stages, and then the game is basically over. Sure, it gets more challenging, but there's never the feeling that your progress is somehow rewarded. Still, with 21 achievements there are a lot of things to do after the credits roll, but I doubt that most people will bother with it. Fans of the genre should definitely have a look, all others should at least wait until there's a discount.
