Better than the first in some ways, but not in others

thetroc

The first Darksiders was a wonderful Zelda style adventure with God of War style combat. The second does more of the same, but has a few flaws. The weapons and item drops are completely randomized versus finding specific weapons like in the first. Item management can be a little tedious and you'll always find better weapons than you can buy at shops. The game is a little too long for its own good and there are definitely sections that could have been trimmed down. The individual dungeons are tremendous and fun. The story is not as strong as the first, although there is enough to keep you going. Combat: Weapon variety and move sets allow you to make the combat as complex or as simple as you'd like. Enemy variety is great, but there are a lot of re-skins. Dungeons: Larger and more complex than the first game, but without as many tools and gadgets, the puzzles are more environmental. There are areas that can't be reached in the beginning of the game, so revisiting previous areas will have benefits. Graphics: More stylized than the first, but less interesting because of the fantasy environments. The first game had a mix of modern day post apocalypse Earth and fantasy, while this game is set on a completely different world. There are a variety of areas and each is very different from the last. Overtop character designs are nice. This game runs at only 30fps with heavy aliasing compared to the clean 60 fps of the first. Graphics aren't much improved, so I'm not sure why the frame-rate took such a hit. Fortunately it is a stable 30 fps. Sound and Music: Better music which really gets your blood pumping. Sound design is good and the voice acting and characters are excellent. Worth playing, but not as good as the first game and the performance problems bring it down.
