Old school rpg game in a gothic-western setting. I loved it.

So i'm sure you've heard...If you've played X-COM then this is the game for you. Well that's pretty much spot on. I really liked this game, not just because i'm into my "turn-based strategy" games, but also because of how the game carries itself over more than enough levels/scenarios. The graphics were excellent and almost had a animated feel to them. The voice overs sounded authentic and the music also fitted right in. The stories behind the scenarios weren't anything special, but for me, that was the weakest aspect. The difficulty can be adjusted, but playing my way through the game on "medium" difficulty was a challenge. Was it harder than X-COM? For some parts it was, mainly because you would have to restart a level again if you died at the very end of that level, very unforgiving!! But the game as a whole is no way near as in depth as X-COM, but that's OK, because the game is just that good. Some scenarios will take you up to an hour or two to complete fully, optional objectives are there for you to achieve, and these will benefit you later in the game or at least later that particular level. All in all it's a must play game, excellent level design, excellent authentic sfx and music, excellent weapons {which can up-graded} and an excellent balance between the levels of difficulty. I was disappointed that i had completed the game, and for me, that's a sign of a good/great game.

A fun but challenging game.

Hard West is a fun turn based game that plays a lot like XCOM which means there will be a large amount of missed attacks. The game has an overwatch mechanic which in XCOM is an ability that lets your characters automatically fire on an enemy who moves within a certain range of your character during the other players turn but for some reason in Hard West you don't really get access to this ability however the AI does have this and it does a ton of damage with a very high hit chance. There is a luck system in this game that acts like mana for your skills or abilities but it also plays a role in a characters accuracy. If a character is damaged then they'll earn more luck and a character that dodges an attack will lose some luck. The problem I had with the luck system is if a character has more luck then they'll have a higher chance of dodging an attack which means using an ability usually ended up with that character getting hit or dying. I didn't like that the story is split into a few mini campaigns which means you'll lose any weapons, armor, gold, extra characters and everything else that you may have found after completing that part of the games story. The game automatically saves at the start of a mission and at the end of a mission but you're only allowed to play the newest auto save and there is no manual saving unfortunately. There is an optional ironman mode which forces you to restart the entire part of the story that you were playing if an important character dies instead of just that mission which can be challenging. You can also enable injuries which gives your injured characters a debuff that reduces their stats for extra difficulty. Overall this game is pretty good even though it does have some flaws.

Very good turn based Weird West style game

Great setting, that is likely to remind those familiar with it of Deadlands. Choices made during events can lead to different items, extra characters, bonuses, and penalties gained during the main or optional story segments. Good variety of weapons and abilities that are enjoyable to use. Weapons can have different abilities, ammo values, effective ranges, reload amounts, and passive effects. Characters can be customised by giving each up to five cards, unlocked over time, cards give passive bonuses and abilities to activate, creating poker hands with the equipped cards unlocks bonuses passives increases to stats. Crippling injuries can heal to become amusing bonuses/penalties. A luck system is used to help characters to avoid being hit and to power special abilities. Enemies missing you will reduce your luck while getting hit will increase your luck causing you to attempt to make more tactical decisions when it comes to preparing to use special abilities or when deciding where to position characters.

Hard West - review

Hard West is a title playable only in single mode; is a clone of XCOM dedicated to the old west. Between missions and the other, the game gives us the opportunity to explore in fact the map of the area where there is the portion of the story, visiting places that allow the story to move forward but also to us to make decisions that are in some way to influence subsequent events. You can for example choose to take action to weaken an enemy rather than another, or even go around collecting money and then spend it to market, to buy weapons and items to use in battle. The exploration of the map allows to recruit additional allies to take along. The element of greatest distinction presented by Hard West is the concept of luck, according to which a shot fails to hit the target or not. When attacking, the success rate of stroke is compared with the number of points-luck possessed by the enemy. If the difference is positive, the bullet hits, otherwise misses. With each stroke of the opponent escaped, the character loses a shift amount of luck linked to the above comparison, conversely earning points when being hit. Instead of the usual skill tree, Hard West offers a variety of poker cards, each associated with active or passive ability to assign one of the characters, interchangeably between a mission and the other. It 'a good title, enjoyable and well done.
