Game description

Those who love Mario games will find everything they want and much more when they play SUPER MARIO 3D LAND. The game reinvents the platforming adventure of the series and brings it to the Nintendo 3DS family of handhelds in true 3D for the first time.

Not only does this mean you’ll get a 3D Mario game that plays just like a 2D Mario game, but you’ll also experience a level of distance, depth and speed that is truly exhilarating. Making running, jumping and stomping on your enemies across all the fabulous levels of the game seems that much more fun.

As with all the games developed specifically for the Nintendo 3DS system, you can also enjoy it in 2D. However, to better judge depths and distances across various environments, you may want to indulge yourself in the full 3D effect. Not only does this element offer another reason to buy SUPER MARIO 3D LAND, it also helps more accurately judge things like how far it is to the next platform or question block!

There are plenty of features to enjoy, with outfits including the fan-favourite Tanooki Suit, which allows you to attack your enemies in a unique way or just float gently down from greater heights. This kind of accessible yet challenging gameplay will go down well with those who buy or download SUPER MARIO 3D LAND and want familiar gameplay, as well as those looking for a new adventure!

So head for the end-of-level flagpole and make full use of Mario's signature moves, new skills and ability to find hidden shortcut and secrets, as you take on new enemies like tall stacks of Goombas, ink-spitting Piranha Plants and Goombas with tails!

One of the finest handheld platformers

Nintendo has nailed Mario so many times over the years, and this is no exception. 3D Land is one of the few games I've just gone ham over and fully 100% it because it's just so damn good, and being handheld helps a lot in bringing it everywhere. This is just guaranteed Mario quality, there's nothing actually new here, this isn't gonna make you a fan of Mario if you dislike platformers, but it's exactly what this series is best at, and Nintendo knows this. Level design, music, controls, everything is just perfect and it packs a lot of content in a small package.

Easly best handheld 3D Mario

While Super Mario 64 is considered by many best and "THE" 3D Mario game, on DS it wasn't that great. It was far from bad, but the biggest draw was the awkward camera. Here there is no such issue. This game almost feels like 2D Mario game put straight into 3D - the stages are rather small, but you can explore every nook and cranny of it. And it rewards exploration with another stages after beating the game, which while are nearly identical to the main game, give you a nice challange. Thankfully this game doesn't force 3D on you and plays perfectly fine in 2D mode - you lose nothing other than a gimmick of 3D depth without 3D glasses, which with 3DS was little unpolished, because it was a chore to place the console in perfect place without the screen going blurry. Music is great and there are classic tunes from all of the games of old, controls and gameplay are strong as ever, and the game has decent lenght (8 hours). There is no reason not to like it. Maybe it's not the best Mario game, but without shadow of a doubt it is best 3D Mario on handheld. I recommend it.

One of the best handheld Mario games

Super Mario 3D Land is one of, if not THE, best handheld Mario game on the 3DS. It feels like a nice mix of NSMB meeting Mario 64, with some absolutely inspired level design. It's typical Mario gameplay you will either love or leave, but if you have an interest in exceptional platform games, this is a must. Weirdly, despite the 3D gimmick, I found myself often leaving this in 2D as my biggest frustration with the 3DS is moving my eyes from off centre slightly and getting a blurred effect, and there is a fair amount of moments I moved the 3DS in my hands playing this. Having said that, the game plays perfectly well in 2D, and is a breeze to control with the analogue stick. It's tough - some of the challenges and levels are going to be tough for new Mario players to achieve, and the addition of a Luigi playthrough after you finish Mario was a huge bonus for me!
