Game description

THE DESCENDANT is a five part episodic adventure game series where the end of the world is only the start.

After climate change wrecked the planet, a man-made extinction event wiped humankind off the face of the Earth. Only a few thousand ‘descendants of humanity’ were hand-picked to survive the apocalypse, cryogenically suspended in underground bunkers known as Arks.

Centuries passed. The world recovered from the nuclear holocaust, and all the Arks reopened, except one — Ark-01.

Taking place across two timelines, in the past you'll play as Mia, a janitor tasked with keeping the precious descendants housed within Ark-01 alive while the facility continually fails around her, and in the present, you'll play as Donnie, one of the investigators trying to rescue any surviving descendants trapped within, all while discovering a far greater conspiracy buried within the underground Ark complex.

Every action and choice you make directly impacts who lives and who dies, leaving the fate of Ark-01, and mankind itself, in your hands. Will you save mankind? Or doom us all?

Key Features:

  • An episodic adventure spreading across multiple story-rich timelines
  • Investigative gameplay, challenging puzzles, tense action sequences
  • Meaningful and difficult choices with branching dialogue
  • A tailored experience, full of tension and drama
  • Every player choice can influence the future of mankind

Good Science Fiction

I bought this game when it first released as a single episode. I was a bit rough around the edges then, but had a definite Telltale quality to it. There are time sensitive answers, quicktime events, and the hints about decisions (so-and-so will remember that). The game however plays more like a traditional graphic adventure, with areas of third person gameplay. You walk around from area to area instead of only getting control when there is a room of stuff to search or people to interact with. As the episodes progressed, Gaming Corps went back and polished up the game. Updating the engine, and re-recorded all of the dialogue. It went from rough around the edges to a smooth experience after that. A few problems still persist though, depending on your tolerance and input method. First there is the 30fps cap, which personally I didn't have a problem with. If this is an issue for you, you can change a registry entry to push it to 60 (check the steam forums). Second, if you are going to use a gamepad, be ready for the same issues that the Resident Evil remakes have: As the scene changes, the direction your character is facing will change, and your brain immediately tries to compensate by moving the joystick. I powered through it, but mouse control works just fine. The story is a bit melodramatic in places, but overall it was an interesting tale that suited the episodic design nicely. The characters are convincing, but not exactly memorable. They are meant to be everyday people, and they come across exactly that way. I found the obstacles to be mostly easy, with a few logic puzzles at the end that can be solved through trial and error. This game is meant to be a narrative, not something to stump or frustrate you. There are a few areas where they clearly wanted to add more, but likely couldn't due to the costs involved. Hopefully The Descendant makes enough of a splash to fund a second season or another project. Gaming Corps have a strong start here, and I look forward to what comes next.

Good visual novel and puzzler mix.

The Descendant is an interesting visual style novel placed in science-fiction post apocalyptic setting. Although most of the puzzles are rather easy there are many variation of them so the developer tries to keep things fresh throughout the entire game. Plot is also interesting and intense. Recommended!
