Description

In the world of espionage, nothing is as it seems in this blockbuster RPG thriller, Alpha Protocol™. Players will assume the role of Michael Thorton, a highly skilled – yet inexperienced - government operative trained to eliminate threats to national security. When a mission goes horribly wrong, Thorton is the only one with the information, skills, and audacity to stop an impending international catastrophe. To do so, he will utilize the very government directive that the enemy sought to use to against him - Alpha Protocol.

Set in modern day, Alpha Protocol gives players complete control not only of Thorton’s actions but his personality and attitude as well, all of which will determine the future of the world as we know it. Blending fast-paced modern combat, significant character advancement and innovative RPG features, Alpha Protocol brings a fresh new perspective to the genre.

With a story rivaling the best spy-thriller novels and an immersive, ultra-realistic espionage world, Alpha Protocol will redefine the RPG genre for the next-gen gamer. The title is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment – creators of Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic II The Sith Lords™ and Neverwinter Nights 2™.

Features:

  • Redefined RPG – Classless system gives players the ability to mold Thorton into the secret agent they want him to become with lethal close combat techniques, marksman skills proficiency with gadgets and much more.

  • The International Spy – Players will travel around the world to international safe house locations to obtain information and mission objectives and conduct meetings with a growing list of contacts.

  • Dialogue Stance System – With an innovative real-time dialogue system, characters will remember conversations and the relationships with allies; enemies will be determined by their attitude and the dialogue response chosen by the player.

A flawed gem

UltraGT | Sept. 23, 2011 | See all UltraGT's reviews »

It's not the best action, stealth, or RPG game. Yet it tries to do all three genres at the same time, failing and succeeding in mixed ways. The levels feel a little too linear and narrow for a stealth game, the graphics are bland and uninteresting and the shooting mechanics don't feel too good, being stat-based. On the other hand, the story and characters (Steven Heck rules!) are great. The dialogues are exciting and fluid as well, leading to many tense or extreme situations where you have to pick your answer quickly.

But where this game really shines is in the action-consequence department. The amount of choices is INMENSE, leading to a lot of different outcomes. I have already replayed the game 3 times and I'm still seeing new conversations or getting new info that I couldn't discover in previous playthroughs. It's a shame this game wasn't polished enough because it could have been a masterpiece, instead of becoming a flawed gem and gaining the status of 'cult game'.

An ok game

Many games provide countless hours of entertainment for a decent price, but Alpha Protocol fails on these fronts. Poor graphics with pop-in graphics, annoying controls and quite fun gameplay that just becomes a chore. Alpha Protocol is one of those games that is fun for an hour, and then bores to death. If you are a massive espionage gaming fan, or an rpg-lover, perhaps even both then you may want to check this out.

A great game, despite its flaws

Alpha Protocol was a game highly anticipated by me because I love the stealth genre. I've played through it multiple times, but only as a stealth character so I can't really comment on the other types of playthroughs. Just after release there were many complaints relating to the minigames for lockpicking and such, but those have since been resolved through patches. The stealth and related mechanics have worked really well for me, the dialog and choices are great, and the story is top notch. The main problem I have with the game right now is the boss fights. At the end of each part of the story, you are forced to do a boss fight that, if you are using a stealth character, you really are not prepared for. But seeing as its my only complaint, Alpha Protocol is a great game. If you like stealth action, give it a try

Feels like an Indie

thomasgjj | Aug. 16, 2011 | See all thomasgjj's reviews »

This game is a great game but it feels like it is missing something.

Everything feels like it is either an Indie title or it is in early beta testing. The graphics are OK, the AI is very buggy and the combat is OK.

Although there are these small problems with the game the game is still very fun to play and has an amazing plot!

Good story and dialogue, bad gameplay

Quizn0s | Aug. 14, 2011 | See all Quizn0s's reviews »

The story and dialogue options in this game are amazing. The story changes depending on the choices you make, and adds a great replay value. In conversation, there are different options that make the direction of the conversation change, and even doing something as simple as not saying something can have far reaching consequences. Unfortunately, the shooting and stealth suck. But I'd say it's worth the money.
